What happens to lovers while they are sleeping? Are they just sleeping next to each other, each on their own, or are they sharing certain places or emotions? Is it a nocturnal lovers? dance - which is not necessarily sensual, but rather a kind of unconscious act of tenderness - or are they turning their backs on each other? Is there a union with the other, with one?s self?

These are the questions that Paul Schneggenburger tries to address with images rather than answers. ?The Sleep of the Beloved? was his thesis work at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 2010 and has developed since then into an ongoing long-term project.

Each image from ?The Sleep of the Beloved? consists of one long-term exposure. The exposure time was six hours, from midnight until 6 am. They were not digitally altered in any way. The room with the bed is in his live-in studio, he himself was never in the room during the exposure. He just loaded the film, lit the candles, and set up the stage. He then turned the camera on from the living room and his self-constructed ?timer? turned the camera back off again in the morning.

Paul Schneggernburger was born in Freiburg, Germany in 1982 and now lives in Vienna, Austria. He studied experimental design with Herbert Lachmayer at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz and fine art photography with Gabriele Rothemann at the University for Applied Arts in Vienna. Solo exhibitions: The Sleep of the Beloved (2010, Hildebrandgasse 9, Vienna), Assunta (2006, Schaufenster, Berlin), Photographs (2005, Artothek Gallery, Vienna). Group exhibitions: The Essence (2010, K?nstlerhaus, Vienna), ARTmART (2009, K?nstlerhaus, Vienna), Positionen junger Kunst (2005, Palais Epstein, Vienna), Facing (2003, WestLicht Photography Gallery, Vienna), Rien ne va plus (2003, Heiligenkreuzerhof, Vienna), Hanoi feeling (2003, Hang Bai Exhibition Center, Hanoi, Vietnam), Hanoi feeling (ASEM5 Convention Center, Singapore). Several scholarships and photographs in collections including that of the cultural department of the City of Vienna. Publications in magazines including Photonews and the British Journal of Photography.
