Talking to Your Loved One About In Home Care Part 2

In Talking to Your Loved One About In Home Care Part 1, we discussed a number of key things to consider when approaching the subject of assisted living or in-home care with a loved one who needs it. The beginning of this process -- and possibly the most important initial steps -- include educating yourself about senior care and discussing the idea with other family members first. In this installment of the series we'll detail 5 more steps in the process of talking to your loved one about in home care.

Make the Object of the Discussion Known

Once you've collected all of the relevant information and discussed the idea with other family members, it's time to mention the idea to your loved one. The best way to do this is to not "beat around the bush," and just let your family member know what you'd like to talk about. Asking for a discussion without telling them the subject will probably only serve to stress or irritate them, so do them the courtesy of being forthwith in your request:

"I'd like to talk to you about getting a little help for you/us around here." "I was thinking that we could have someone come in to lend a hand with things." "We should talk about getting a little assistance with your daily care."

Even if the idea isn't warmly received right away, your loved one will appreciate you being up-front about the issue, and letting them know what you want to talk about in advance will give them some time to think about it.

Set a specific time for the discussion

This is important because it's the beginning of a commitment process; first a commitment to the talk, then a commitment to think about it, and hopefully a commitment to try in-home care. Make sure you let your loved one know that you value your time and theirs by setting a time and expectation for the conversation.

Allow a Natural Exchange

A natural dialogue is critical if you expect to make positive progress. State a point, be brief with it, and let your family member respond. Even if their mental state doesn't appear to you to warrant such an exchange, you need to allow for it, as this is an important discussion. The more your loved one feels that they are being empowered to make a healthy, independent decision to get a little assistance, the more likely it is that they'll agree to try it.

Don't Force It

Unfortunately, some of our elders may see in home care as a loss of independence and might be naturally resistant to it. Forcing the issue is only going to make things worse. Be patient. Listen to what they have to say and try to put yourself in their situation.

Try again

Ultimately, in home care, senior care and/or assisted living can help to improve the quality of life of everyone in your family involved in providing care for your loved one. So if they're not receptive to the idea right away, give it some time and try again. Patience and understanding will go much farther than trying to rapidly make such an important change.

To learn more and to get an immediate consultation about care for your family member, contact a professional in home care provider now. They can help you develop a solution for your family that will have you all living a better quality of life.

And this is what happened right this moment, gaming will not be the monopoly of a small baby again.

The title of a recreation right now may have been thought-about to be the universal toy. Appear to be want to more and more might be absorbed properly by all ages, the sport was made with totally different ranges of difficulty. Ranging from stage ?Newbie? to ?Advance?-made to suit the participant?s skill level. If already like this, then the sport was in all probability already may be played by toddlers to adults. Every has been created for the portion of their game. Nonetheless in regards to the portion of the sport, not solely the levels of issue are offered in a variety. Own recreation sort is also offered in varied ways. Ranging from the ?profession? or that?s personal profession, so the competition is played with lots of competitors or enemies are also there. And a more fascinating recreation improvement is more of a customized nature. Whether it is the kind of racing recreation, a battle to soccer, each participant is possible to decorate the car, or set the ways of battle, or the crew or the squad also set up in accordance with their very own desires. It is vitally uncommon, as a result of the players are allowed to personalize themselves in each recreation they play. This is nearer to the participant?s creativeness in a digital type of actual gaming.

Then how far the category recreation creating? Categorization recreation itself growing very large. Presently out there quite a lot of recreation categories. Ranging from the category of racing games similar to Moto GP, F1, Need For Speed, Colin McRae Rally; category battle or battle games similar to Counter Strike, Sniper Elite, Black Hawk Down, Mercenaries; also the category of sports activities games like FIFA recreation, Championship Supervisor, Football Supervisor, Profitable Eleven, NBA, Street Ball; and lots of other recreation categories that also circulate within the market. Every little thing is made to bask in consumer preferences so far as potential, in this case are gamers.

It?s then perhaps the query is what advantages can we obtained from taking part in games? Initial concept of a recreation is unquestionably as leisure media. And positively nearly all games made for entertainment. About how someone truly becomes repeatedly much less stress as a result of when taking part in games, that?s one other matter. But ought to like also in aggressive sports activities, the sport also needs to help the players to study sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is itself a optimistic worth expected from a recreation contained. In addition to in everyday life, not forever we ?win?, but additionally we aren?t forever ?losing?. Every little thing must work properly as within the game. Madonna Covers Lady Gaga in Concert: A Diss or a Tribute?

Madonna recently went out of her way to once again not-so-subtly remind everyone that she is, in fact, in a sense, an older version of Lady Gaga.

The queen of pop was performing "Express Yourself" at a rehearsal in Tel Aviv, Israel when she suddenly trotted out a cover of "Born This Way."

Of course, the two tracks blended seamlessly, reviving debate over whether Lady Gaga ripped off Madonna with her 2011 smash hit single.

Although she stayed mum on Gaga's song for some time, Madge eventually referred to it as "reductive" and undoubtedly influenced by her earlier work.

There is no actual feud here, but the whole thing seems to have an air of condescension, as if Madonna is wielding the cover over her head.

Or, on the other hand, is Madonna merely winking at the controversy while celebrating the younger performer and the highest form of flattery?

Tell us what you think in the comments below.

(AP) ? Imagine a tiny snake robot crawling through your body, helping a surgeon identify diseases and perform operations.

It's not science fiction. Scientists and doctors are using the creeping metallic tools to perform surgery on hearts, prostate cancer, and other diseased organs. The snakebots carry tiny cameras, scissors and forceps, and even more advanced sensors are in the works. For now, they're powered by tethers that humans control. But experts say the day is coming when some robots will roam the body on their own.

"It won't be very long before we have robots that are nanobots, meaning they will actually be inside the body without tethers," said Dr. Michael Argenziano, the Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Argenziano was involved with some of the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration clinical trials on robotic heart surgery more than 10 years ago. Now he says snake robots have become a commonly used tool that gives surgeons a whole new perspective.

"It's like the ability to have little hands inside the patients, as if the surgeon had been shrunken, and was working on the heart valve," he said.

But Argenziano and experts in robotics say the new creations work best when they're designed for very specific tasks. "The robot is a tool. It is no different in that sense than a scalpel. It's really a master-slave device," he said.

Howie Choset has been researching and building robots, particularly snake robots, at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University for years.

Choset believes that his snake robot and others like it help reduce medical costs by making complex surgeries faster and easier. Choset says his new design is smaller and more flexible than earlier models: The diameter of the head is less than the size of a dime.

The size of surgical robots allows surgeons to operate with far less damage to the body, helping the patient heal faster. For example, instead of opening the entire chest up during heart surgery, a small incision is made, and the robot crawls inside to the proper spot.

Dr. Ashutosh Tewari of Cornell University Medical Center has used robotic tools to perform thousands of prostate operations. He said the precision of the tiny robotic tool is vital not just to cutting out cancerous tumors, but to seeing exactly what nerves to leave intact.

Tewari said he's most excited about the potential for surgical robots to do things humans can't do. He said the variety of sensors available for surgical robots keeps expanding, even as they get smaller. He said they may one day be able to test chemicals or blood in the body, or even the electrical connections in nerves.

Choset has also built larger snake robots designed for search and rescue, or just exploration. They can climb poles or trees and then look around through a camera in the head, and slither through places humans can't reach.

"We sent our snake robots into these caves off the coast of the Red Sea to look for evidence of ancient Egyptian ships," he said. "To me archaeology is like search and rescue, but everyone's been dead for 5,000 years," reducing the pressure.

Another expert at Carnegie Mellon stresses that there's still an enormous gap between humans and even the most high-tech robots. Manuela Velosa noted that robots have been built that excel at one or two tasks ? but not at the variety of tasks humans perform without even thinking.

Velosa has been building robots that ask humans for help when they don't know what to do, as well as teams of robots that play soccer against each other. Sometimes, the robots surprise her.

During one soccer game against robots from another university, the Carnegie Mellon team scored on a particular play. That sent a positive signal to the robot's computers, which are designed to reward success and discourage failures in the game.

Her robots then tried the play again ? and scored again. It turned out they had discovered a programing flaw in the other team of robots, just like some sports teams find a flaw in their opponents.

In the second half Velosa's robot's kept using the same play, scoring every time, and thus reinforcing the tendency to try the play over and over. The robots crushed the other team.

"It was programmed by me, but it looked to me as if they learned," she said. "I believe we are much closer to having robots be able to coexist with humans. The beautiful thing is you see the robots learning."

Apple iPhone 5 Release-Date Announcement Predicted in 2 Weeks

Anticipation for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, June 11-15, is starting to ramp up, and so is talk of a possible iPhone announcement at the annual event.

The Silicon Valley computer giant focused on software rather than hardware at last year's WWDC, and has promised more of the same this year; most analysts expect we'll get some info on iOS 6 coming out of the conference, slated for San Francisco's Moscone Center.

But Apple has always been mum about new hardware announcements, and speculation is once again growing that WWDC will feature an iPhone-related announcement, much as it has in the past. Last year was an exception ? the company didn't unveil the iPhone 4S until the fall, a couple of weeks before it went on sale in October. Of course, the company was a little preoccupied earlier in the year, releasing a version of the device compatible with Verizon's network for the first time. And the iPhone made its Sprint debut later in the year as well.

Many analysts and other industry-watchers have taken Apple's comments about a software-focused WWDC at face value, but some this year, including Asian financial services firm Daiwa Securities, have predicted that the company will indeed make news with an iPhone release date at the event. Other reports from manufacturing lines in Asia have backed that up.

That being said, the prevailing opinion is for a fall launch, roughly one year after the debut of the iPhone 4S. Click here for a roundup of all the latest rumors surrounding the device. The latest speculation is that Apple has applied for a patent for what will be dubbed the "iPen," a stylus that would accompany the iPhone and iPad, Patently Apple reported.

Has Apple permanently shifted its iPhone hardware updates to the fall? Time will tell.

European privacy regulators want more detail on Google's policy changes

IDG News Service - European privacy regulators want better answers from Google about its privacy policy and the way it informs its users about changes to it.

Last month Google responded to a questionnaire about the policy sent by the French National Commission on Computing and Liberty (CNIL), acting on behalf of the European Union's national data privacy regulators.

However, the regulators were not satisfied. On Tuesday CNIL wrote again to Google CEO Larry Page, asking the company to elaborate on some of its answers.

One of the first things the regulators had wanted to know was how many people had consulted the main site for Google's revised privacy policy. Google said it couldn't provide a number, to the astonishment of the regulators.

"Given Google's extensive development and use of analytic tools, we are surprised that Google has not measured the impact of the campaign in order to assess efficiency of this information. Could you please confirm that you have no such information?" they asked in their letter Tuesday.

Google also failed to detail and explain the contents of the cookies it stores on users' computers, prompting the regulators to repeat that question.

Despite the answers provided by Google so far, CNIL considers it impossible to know how Google processes personal data, nor to determine who receives the data and why, it said in a statement. As such, it said, Google was not respecting its obligation under European law to inform the subjects of the data. In all, CNIL sought answers, or clarifications of answers, for almost half the 69 questions in the original questionnaire.

One issue bothering CNIL was the period for which Google retains data, or backups of that data, something it was unable to determine from Google's initial answers. Google told CNIL that backup tapes were encrypted and that the encryption keys were routinely deleted, but it did not say how often, or after what period. It asked Google to provide "the typical period that is used to renew the encryption keys for backup tapes and an upper-bound for the deletion or complete anonymisation of data."

CNIL officials were set to meet with Google representatives Wednesday to discuss the contents of the letter, among other issues.

Google representatives declined to comment on the discussions. The company has received CNIL's follow-up questions, and is reviewing them, a company spokeswoman said Thursday.

CNIL has given Google until June 8 to answer the second questionnaire. After that, Europe's privacy regulators will discuss the responses and, by mid-July, inform Google of any changes they think it needs to make to bring it into compliance with European data protection law.

New media deployed in battle to preserve history

It started with an inflatable pig. Jeffrey Shaw has always been fascinated by interactivity, having in the 1960s created art he hoped would narrow the gap between viewer and image.

His pig starred on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 concept album "Animals", floating eerily above London's Battersea Power Station, in what has become one of the most famous images in rock music history.

"I was already very interested then in audience participation," said the Melbourne native, who is currently Dean of the School of Creative Media at City University, Hong Kong.

"So instead of a bronze or stone sculpture with which you could do nothing, a lot of the artwork I was making was to do with inflatable structures, which people could jump on or throw around."

In the same spirit, Shaw has developed what he calls "cultural heritage visualisation", a technique that he hopes will help preserve key sites around the world before the onslaught of mass tourism destroys them.

Shaw said his most important project to date is a collaboration with the Dunhuang Academy in Gansu Province, China. Dunhuang is in an oasis amid the Gobi desert and a former gateway to and from China on the ancient Silk Road.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Shaw is working on is made up of 492 Buddhist grotto temples -- or Mogaoku -- which contain murals, statues and architectural monuments of enormous cultural and historical value.

Shaw's aim is to create a definitive record of how the caves look now and use it to create a reconstruction of the environment.

To ensure their preservation, it is likely the caves will be eventually sealed. Future access will therefore be virtual, relying on digital media and the visualization work that Shaw is doing.

His work was recently exhibited in Hong Kong, using a full laser scan of the escarpment at Dunhuang and high-resolution photography to build a virtual environment, on a one-to-one scale, for visitors to explore.

Technologies used to augment the experience include detailed re-colouring and restoration, a variable scale magnifying glass, virtual touch and 3D animation.

Shaw even worked with two dancers from the Beijing Dance Academy to bring to life their ancient painted counterparts.

At the moment, only one of Dunhuang's 735 caves has been reconstructed to this level of detail.

The project's goal is to develop a demonstration of 10 to 20 virtual caves, enabling the Dunhuang Academy to potentially tour it to major museums around the world. The British and Getty museums have signalled interest.

"This brilliant example of Chinese heritage could really go out into the world," said Shaw.

"One has to recognise that in terms of conservation and sustainability of the original artefact, creating effective and persuasive surrogate experiences is really worthwhile and useful," Shaw said.

Born in 1944, he has spent 50 years as an artist and researcher at the forefront of the new media field.

The dissemination of national heritage through new media, its educational value and its impact on advancing understanding between cultures, is one reason Shaw believes his work is fundamental to future cultural conservation.

Another is the survival of the site itself. Dunhuang, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and many other historical sites suffer ongoing damage as a result of mass tourism, for which they were not designed.

Taking that pressure off by documenting and then sealing them is probably, said Shaw, the only solution to their long-term preservation.

The material is presented in an interactive panoramic cinema known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interaction Environment), which offers opportunities to experiment with virtual and augmented realities.

"The notion of interactive cinema is one way of describing everything we're doing, because it's definitely in the tradition of the cinema -- of big spectacle, high-quality imaging and storytelling," he said.

AVIE was developed, under Shaw's direction, with the University of New South Wales in Sydney between 2006 and 2008. The system uses six 3D projectors, six PCs with game graphics cards in them, surround-sound audio and a giant circular television screen.

Moreover, the technology's potential for academic study is significant, in that many scholars can access the caves in a richer and more detailed way than at the physical site, where restrictions are in place to minimise damage.

Shaw and his colleagues have completed similar initiatives at Angkor Wat and the World Heritage Site of Hampi, southern India, among others. He says the Dunhuang project is the largest yet.

Another of Shaw's current projects is a collaboration with Europeana, a massive database developed by the European Commission, which pools all the cultural assets and resources of Europe's major museums.

For the centenary of the start of World War I in 2014, Shaw is working with the database to create a comprehensive, virtual 3D exhibition of material from that moment in history, which visitors will be able to navigate via iPads.

Also underway is a 360-degree visualisation of a Qing Dynasty scroll from the Maritime Museum in Hong Kong, which illustrates the fight against pirates who infested Guangdong waters in the late 18th century.

"If you think back to cinema," says Shaw, "it was a new technology. People invented the camera and invented the projector, it was a technological framework that allowed the cinema to exist.

"What's interesting about the cinema is that all kinds of filmmakers have been able to make all kinds of films using this apparatus, so the technology is validated as a cultural tool. Rather than putting a strait-jacket on it, the technology releases creative activity."

A look at each of the 16 teams at Euro 2012

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:10 a.m. ET May 25, 2012

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -A brief look at each of the 16 teams at this year's European Championship:

Group A(equals)

Poland(equals)

Playing at home will give Poland a huge boost, but it could still be tough to make it out of the first round. With the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal as possible quarterfinal opponents from Group B, the host nation is unlikely to make it into the semifinals.

Greece(equals)

The Euro 2004 champions were drawn in a relatively easy group and have an excellent record under coach Fernando Santos (7-3-0 in qualifying), but getting through the first round of a major tournament still isn't easy. Since their victory over Portugal eight years ago, the Greeks failed to get out of the group stage at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

Russia(equals)

The Russians excelled at the last European Championship, but despite winning their qualifying group last year they are not expected to be among the contenders in Poland and Ukraine. But with Andrei Arshavin and Pavel Pogrebnyak up front, they should be scoring plenty of goals.

Czech Republic(equals)

The Czechs needed to go through the playoffs to reach Euro 2012. Heading into the final tournament, the 1976 champions are the lowest ranked team of the 14 qualifiers at No. 29. Only co-hosts Poland and Ukraine, who qualified automatically, are ranked lower.

---

Group B(equals)

Netherlands(equals)

The World Cup runners-up were put into the toughest group, but they should still be able to make it into the quarterfinals with Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder all threats up front. The team's final match against Portugal is likely to be decisive.

Denmark(equals)

The Danes are the lowest ranked team in the group, and the biggest outsiders. The 1992 champions will likely need all the other teams to beat each other for them to sneak through.

Germany(equals)

Germany reached the final at Euro 2008 and the semifinals at the World Cup two years later, and they should be getting better. Bastian Schweinsteiger has become the heart of the team, but Thomas Mueller, Mario Gomez and Mesut Oezil are the ones most likely to provide the goals.

Portugal(equals)

Cristiano Ronaldo will have another chance to shine on the big stage, and he will have to carry Portugal if the Euro 2004 finalists want to make it into the quarterfinals. Among the top players in the world, Ronaldo has so far failed to play his best when wearing a Portugal shirt.

---

Group C(equals)

Spain(equals)

The defending champions from Spain are many people's favorite to win another major title. The Spanish finally ended their 44-year drought at major tournaments when they beat Germany in the Euro 2008 final in Vienna, and then followed that up by winning their first World Cup trophy two years ago in Johannesburg. With Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta controlling play, they are a good bet to make it three in a row.

Italy(equals)

The Italians have been on the decline since winning their fourth World Cup title in 2006, and despite winning their qualifying group they are not expected to challenge for the Euro 2012 championship. But if Mario Balotelli makes the team and can showcase his skill, Italy could mount a championship run.

Ireland(equals)

After the disappointment of missing out on the last World Cup because of a handball against France, the Irish made it through to their second European Championship. Coached by Italian veteran Giovanni Trapattoni, the Irish have a team made up mostly of English Premier League players.

Croatia(equals)

The Croats have struggled since qualifying for Euro 2008, missing out on the last World Cup. But they finished second in their qualifying group and beat Euro 2008 semifinalist Turkey in a playoff. To make it through the first round in Poland and Ukraine, the Croats will likely need to beat Italy.

---

Group D(equals)

Ukraine(equals)

Ukraine has never before played at the European Championship, missing out on all four tournaments since it split from the Soviet Union. But as usual, home advantage should give the co-hosts a boost in what is likely to be a tough group.

Sweden(equals)

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the field, the Swedes should not be counted out. The AC Milan striker can score some amazing goals, but he'll have to get through the French and English defenses if Sweden is to have a hope of making a run at the title.

France(equals)

After infighting derailed their chances at the 2010 World Cup, France coach Laurent Blanc seems to have the team back on track. A two-time European champion, the French will be tough to stop with hard-running Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri in the attack.

England(equals)

The English will again be looking to win their first European Championship, but they will arrive with an aging defense, a new coach and a suspended Wayne Rooney (for the first two matches). If the English don't win the group but still advance, a possible quarterfinal match against Spain could be the end.

Random thoughts on the NBA Playoffs so far? and a look ahead

May 26th, 2012 by Chris Humpherys

After watching the Clippers outscore the Spurs by 22 points in the first quarter of Game Three of their playoff series, it appeared, if ever so briefly, that San Antonio was not as invincible as everyone thought.? Then we saw them retaliate with a 50-17 run of their own and realized, perhaps they are.

At only 23 years old each, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are disturbingly good.? The Los Angeles Lakers had to play their very best just to be able to stay on the same floor as them.? The future of the league is in good hands.

In Game Three of the Lakers-Thunder series, the two teams combined to shoot 67-70 from the free throw line, with the Lakers going 41-42 and Kobe going 18-18.? I?ve never gone 18-for-18 at anything.

If Oklahoma City makes the Finals, they?ll have bested four of the last five, and ten of the last thirteen, NBA championship franchises, in doing so.

Why does Gregg Popovich have to be such a sourpuss during mid-game interviews or did Lisa Salters have it coming for asking such stupid questions?

If we had a Philadelphia 76ers-Indianapolis Pacers Eastern Conference Finals, would anyone watch?

Was there ever really a need for Miami to panic if, even down two games to one, Las Vegas still listed them as favorites to win the Pacers series?? Probably not after watching LeBron James go for 40 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists in Game Four and Wade land 41 points and 10 rebounds in Game Six.? As usual, Las Vegas knew just what they were talking about.

How hurt is Chris Bosh really and does it even matter?

Was the Udonis Haslem suspension and Tyler Hansbrough lack thereof fair and how long before some pundit plays the race card?

Did the Knicks even consider contacting Phil Jackson about their head coaching position and if so, which player on that roster would he find most expendable?

How serious were the Orlando Magic about hiring Shaquille O?Neal as their next general manager and why the hell is Dwight Howard talking to TMZ.com?

Would coaching the Bobcats drive Jerry Sloan to drink, particularly considering he lived in Utah for so long?

If you think the Miami Heat have done well with three of the top five drafted players in 2003 on their roster (James, Bosh, Wade), keep in mind, the Oklahoma City Thunder also have three top-five draft picks, all of whom they drafted themselves (Durant, 2nd, 2007; Westbrook, 4th, 2008; Harden, 3rd, 2009).

Which duo this post-season has been more dynamic: Wade/James or Durant/Westbrook?? Let?s hope we find out in the Finals.

Is any lead safe in these playoffs?

If there?s one thing more enjoyable than a Blake Griffin dunk, it was watching Tim Duncan, twelve years his senior, negate those dunks at the rim.

Does anyone else find it ironic that it?s the biggest guys (Bynum, Gasol, Howard) who act like babies while the smaller guys (Westbrook, Parker, Rondo) are among the toughest in the league?

Do you honestly, have any earthly idea who will be this year?s NBA champion?? If so, you know more than everyone else.

No new neurons in the human olfactory bulb

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Research from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden shows that the human olfactory bulb ? a structure in the brain that processes sensory input from the nose ? differs from that of other mammals in that no new neurons are formed in this area after birth. The discovery, which is published in the scientific journal Neuron, is based on the age-determination of the cells using the carbon-14 method, and might explain why the human sense of smell is normally much worse than that of other animals.

"I've never been so astonished by a scientific discovery," says lead investigator Jonas Fris?n, Tobias Foundation Professor of stem cell research at Karolinska Institutet. "What you would normally expect is for humans to be like other animals, particularly apes, in this respect."

It was long thought that all brain neurons were formed up to the time of birth, after which production stopped. A paradigm shift occurred when scientists found that nerve cells were being continually formed from stem cells in the mammalian brain, which changed scientific views on the plasticity of the brain and raised hopes of being able to replace neurons lost during some types of neurological disease.

In the adult mammal, new nerve cells are formed in two regions of the brain: the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb. While the former has an important part to play in memory, the latter is essential to the interpretation of smells. However, owing to the difficulty of studying the formation of new neurons in humans, the extent to which this phenomenon also occurs in the human brain has remained unclear. In this present study, researchers at Karolinska Institutet and their Austrian and French colleagues made use of the sharp rise in atmospheric carbon-14 caused by Cold War nuclear tests to find an answer to this question.

Carbon-14 is incorporated in DNA, making it possible to gauge the age of the cells by measuring how much of the isotope they contain. Doing this, the team found that the olfactory bulb neurons in their adult human subjects had carbon-14 levels that matched those at the atmosphere at the time of their birth. This is a strong indication that there is no significant generation of new neurons in this part of the brain, something that sets humans apart from all other mammals.

"Humans are less dependent on their sense of smell for their survival than many other animals, which may be related to the loss of new cell generation in the olfactory bulb, but this is just speculation," continues Professor Fris?n.

Professor Fris?n and his team now plan to study the extent of neuron generation in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is important for higher cerebral functions in humans. This present study was made possible by support from the Tobias Foundation, the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), the American Brain and Behaviour Research Foundation (NARSAD), the Swedish Brain Fund, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, AFA F?rs?kring, the EU and the Stockholm County Council through its ALF agreement with Karolinska Institutet.

Cheap, luxury camping in France for the family | Camping blog

It stands to reason that when you buy holidays, as with everything else, you need to get the best deal possible.

So there are few things more annoying, for example, when you think you have bought a seriously cheap camping holiday in France and you are sat outside your mobile home one evening sharing a bottle of wine with the family next door and boasting about it, when the wife next door drops the bombshell that they paid ?100 less for theirs than you did.

It takes the wind right out of your sails, you are immediately deflated, nauseous, seriously embarrassed and you want to run and hide. OK, well this situation has happened to most of us at some point, and if the wifey next door had kept her mouth shut you could have enjoyed the rest of your holiday in the knowledge that you had got the best deal it was possibly to get.

Of course, she might have been so fed up with your boasting that she invented the figure they paid for their holiday just for the hell of it. Serves you right!

The same thing applies to luxury holidays as we found out last summer in the Vend?e when we were in exactly the same situation being sat outside our mobile home with another couple who were moaning about the quality of furnishings in their caravan.

OK, it wasn?t new but it was clean as a new pin and was undamaged so what?s the problem?

The problem was that they owned a second hand mobile which they had parked somewhere around Skegness, but theirs was much newer and had better fitments then the one the holiday company had allotted them.

I doubted that somehow because when we met I sussed that he was someone too over fond of his own voice and opinions so I let drop that the following week we were moving to another site owned by Select Camp who specialise in luxury camping in France and other European countries.

Now this chap just would not believe me when I told him that Slect Camp provide tents with fully fitted kitchens AND complete bathroom units within their tents. When we returned to England I emailed this big mouth with their URL.

Family camping in France is a big thing these days and it is nice to see that young families are going over there and not being put off by the silly hype that France is too expensive to go to now. It isn?t of course, so spread the word young people because a holiday there quite often costs less than in good old Rip Off Britain.

A$AP Rocky Addresses Kanye West Producer's Criticism

G.O.O.D. Music producer Mike Dean 'was bumpin' us before we got hot. Why stop now?' A$AP Rocky says on 'RapFix Live.'
By Rob Markman

When A$AP Rocky broke through last year with "Purple Swag," he didn't exactly scream NYC. Instead of producing a more-recognized New York sound, Rocky and his A$AP Mob drew from Southern influences. Rock's slowed-down, syrup-drench swag was more Houston than Harlem — then again, that was part of its appeal. Still, Rocky's crew has had its share of critics — most recently, a veteran dirty South producer.

"We need some new H Town rappers to blow up. Why the f--- there all these fake ass Houston knock off artists from up North and West," Mike Dean tweeted Sunday. "I mean rep where you are from not us. We gotta stop this sh-- ASAP!!!!"

"He was just talkin' subliminal about Northern people. You gotta look at it like even Bun B embraces us, and we look up to him too," Rocky said when he appeared on "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. "Not only that, it's love when we're out in the H-Town, and on top of that, he was bumpin' us. This Mike dude was bumpin' us before we got hot. Why stop now?"

After the initial tweets, A$AP Yams responded to Dean in defense of his crew: "@therealmikedean. I respect ur work legendary [but] u def sound ignorant. The new generation is a melting pot of influences from everywhere. Get off that old head sh--."

Dean, who now works with Kanye West and produced a number of tracks on Watch the Throne, made his name with songs for Houston rap legends Big Mello, Z-Ro and Scarface. After some back and forth, Dean tweeted that he "wasn't speaking on anyone in particular" and thanked Yams for keeping the H-Town movement alive.

Yams joined Rocky on the "RapFix" couch Wednesday, saying, "You gotta realize, we're a whole 'nother generation. We didn't just grow up on our sound regionally. We didn't just have DJ Kay Slay mixtapes. We were 8 years old when Master P and Cash Money was coming out, so we still had that as an option. If you look at all the greats, they all just a mixture of everything."

Introducing InsureAssist - The World Wide Will - MedjetAssist

Posted on May 24, 2012

Friends:

I would like to take a minute and introduce you to InsureAssist, a travel insurance provider that has a partnership with MedjetAssist.

For years we?ve had our members ask us. ?Where can we buy travel insurance and is there a company you can recommend??? Now there is. InsureAssist can satisfy all your travel insurance needs!

InsureAssist (www.insureassist.com) has teamed with Nationwide Mutual Insurance Companies, a leader in the travel insurance industry, and offers standard travel insurance protection? trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost and delayed luggage, trip delay, medical, dental and emergency evacuation among other products. Also, coming in a few weeks InsureAssist will be able to offer political, security and natural disaster coverage as well. We think you?ll be impressed with the depth and selection of options available.

For everyone who noticed ?emergency evacuation? and thought that?s what your Medjet membership provides, please allow me to explain the difference:

Your Medjet membership is a vital part of your everyday business or leisure travel needs. Medjet is the air-medical transport component of your travel protection program, meaning if you are hospitalized over 150 miles from home (domestically or internationally) and require in-patient hospitalization, your Medjet membership provides arrangement of medical transfer to the in-patient medical facility of your choice at no additional out of pocket cost. Medjet?s transport service is not an insurance product but rather a benefit available to Medjet members who want the freedom to obtain medical assistance at the in-patient medical facility of choice.

Emergency evacuation is what gets you to the hospital in the event of injury or accident when traveling remotely. For instance, if you are on a cruise and become ill during sailing, your InsureAssist travel insurance evacuation coverage is the mechanism that will actually get you to shore and to in-patient status at a local medical facility. At that point your Medjet membership clicks into effect. This is also for adventure travel and endeavors of the like that actually take you away from land and population base. You will need some type of evacuation insurance protection to get you to a local in-patient medical facility for Medjet to take over and transport you to the hospital of your choice. Of course most of the time evacuation coverage won?t come into play except for the off-shore, remote and adventure travel that takes you away from mainland facilities.

All of us hope this never happens but we know from our day to day experience that accidents do occur while our members are away from home. And your Medjet card should be a staple of all your travel because you never know when and where the unexpected might happen in everyday activity whether traveling in the United States or abroad.

InsureAssist is designed for that particular journey and vacation when you want to protect not only the pre-trip cost but make sure all the incidentals are covered including the actual expense of the trip, assuring all carrier connections are in place, your luggage gets where you are going, emergency evacuation and right down to coverage of medical costs in foreign lands (something not many people readily consider).

Keep your Medjet (www.medjet.com) protection in play at all times. Consider InsureAssist (www.insureassist.com or 1-877-591-8739) when that extra layer of personal and financial travel insurance protection needs to be in place for that special journey!

Safe travels.

Have you been told who holds financial responsibility for any revisions or if complications arise?Surgical deep peels and injectable fillers such as Botox and soft, are not the same as getting facials or other superficial beauty regimens. Make sure you have done your homework on the treatment you need and be aware that these are medical procedures.

If your provider is reluctant or does not answer this question directly, not to continue treatment. Do not be afraid to ask to see the manufacturer?s label for any injectable products.

- It can fill a drug or device will be used for purposes other than which the FDA originally approved?

The medical treatment of any kind is not a commodity. Make sure that it based its decision on the credentials and experience of the practitioner, not on price.

Discuss your expectations with your supplier. If you are promised unqualified, 100 % success, it?s probably best not to proceed. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

- It will be the last injection and prevent the need of a facelift in the future?

All medical procedures, if the injections or surgery carry some risk. If you are not fully informed of all the risks and requirements for after care, find another supplier.

In most cases injectables are temporary solutions and will not give the long-term results of surgery.

In the U.S., the FDA does not forbid physicians to prescribe approved drugs, devices, and charges for other indications of origin and their destiny.

Every day get mailboxes bombarded with coupons of tickets for cinemas, restaurants, spa packages and memberships to fitness. Often, non-surgical medical procedures are promoted on sites like Groupon, Living Lifebook and social, but it is important for the future of the hospital patients to keep in mind that, as microdermabraison procedures, Botox injections, chemical peels and laser hair removal, but still no medical surgical procedures.

If you are someone hyperpigmentation , then you might be interested in knowing the range of skin creams and topical gels Ultraquin lightning, all formulated with 4 percent hydroquinone. Recognized by dermatologists as the gold standard for treatment of conditions involving the dark spots on the skin, Ultraquin is available in three packages to suit a wide range of skin types and needs: the plain Ultraquin hydroquinone 4 percent cream in a perfect fat free and fragrance free for normal / dry skin types

- What are the powers of supervision of medical treatment in the Medi-Spa?

These procedures should never be done in someone?s home, hotel room or at a party. This is not only unethical and legally risky for the injector, but dangerous and potentially dangerous for you.

- How effective are facial injectables and what product is right for me?

- Have all your questions have been answered and are fully aware of the risks and benefits of the procedure?

Users , skin treatments and deep peels should be under the supervision of board-certified plastic surgeons. Ask to see these credentials. Doctors of other specialties, designating themselves as ?cosmetic medicine physicians? can not be the complete training that is required to administer medications and treatments for the deeper layers of the skin and have no experience necessary to obtain good results both for aesthetic or manage potential complications.

Depending on the country where you are, injections and deep peels can be performed by a nurse, physician assistant or nurse. However, never let a non-medical, unlicensed person to perform a medical procedure and be sure that the procedure is supervised by a medical board certified in plastic surgery. Your health and safety depends on it.

Good medical practice and the interests of the patient require that physicians use drugs legally available, and biological devices according to their best knowledge and opinion.

I must base my decision on the best treatment option and not the price?

- The Medi-Spa located outside of the office of the physician, for example, a mall or a salon? If so, ask for the name of the physician responsible for supervising and when they are available for consultation or questions before having any injectable, deep peel or laser treatments. This is vital to protect your health and ensure optimal results. They are generally safe procedures with minimal recovery, but real risks.

?Patients should do their homework when choosing where and with whom to have any medical procedure,? says F. ?Cost is always a factor, but it should never be the deciding factor in cosmetic surgery. Safety and quality are still major problems.?

As advocates for patient safety and healthy outcomes, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery have created the following questions you should ask before buying any medical procedure or treatment in a spa facility or non-traditional. It ?important that you do your homework properly on anything that could affect not only your appearance but your health and safety as well.

Steve Clemons: John McCain's New Institute Launching Tomorrow

mccain institute john mccain.jpg

Despite some of my foreign policy differences -- like the whole bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran thing -- with Senator John McCain who once told me he was "the original neoconservative", I have always greatly, truly admired his patriotism and dedication to trying to get the American political system to operate honestly and in a way consistent with what the framers of the Constitution intended.? He has been a major voice in the country on campaign and elections reform, on fiscal matters, on national security, on immigration, and on leadership in every sense.

His body of work actually deserves a library to house it -- but our system doesn't give those who come in second place for the Presidency a National Archives run operation.? Instead, McCain and a bipartisan group of supporters -- including Senators Kelly Ayotte, Sheldon Whitehouse, Lindsey Graham, Mark Udall, Joe Lieberman, Carl Levin as well as CIA Director David Petraeus, and others --- are punctuating the start of a new university-based institute committed to the leadership principles John McCain exhibited and encouraged, particularly in young people.

Under the leadership of former US Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker who will serve as Executive Director and with a $9 million gift from the McCain institute Foundation (which itself received $9 million in donations from the McCain-Palin campaign surplus), Arizona State University is announcing tomorrow, on Thursday, 24 May, the establishment of the McCain Institute for International Leadership.

The McCain Institute press announcement specifies four key pillars of work:?

???? Provide decision recommendations for leaders through open debate and rigorous analysis, by convening experts, publishing policy-relevant research, and holding decision-making training events using cutting-edge technology.
???? Identify and train new national security leaders, both American and foreign, in public service and private enterprise, as well as military spheres.
???? Play a unique role in a crowded intellectual space by serving as Washington's preeminent "decision tank."
???? Promote and preserve the McCain family spirit of character-driven leadership and national service, including hosting the McCain family archives.
Here is the press release (pdf) announcing establishment of the new McCain Institute -- and here a 6-minute video of several of the Senators above as well as Cindy McCain and ASU President Michael Crow sharing why America needs another policy think tank.

A couple of quick thoughts.? First, John McCain is not a cookie cutter conservative and believes in the kind of rough-and-tumble politics where political actors and branches of government responsibly and vigorously compete and knock into each other. This is not the view of most ideologues -- and is an approach to politics that I think is often misunderstood and should be more greatly valued.

After a decision is reached and law is established, McCain believes that the law needs to be upheld.? As a recent example, John McCain opposed the ending of Don't Ask Don't Tell but sent important signals that he would respect and support the law once it was enacted -- and he has done that and impressed me and others with his position.

In my view, McCain has been a vital, rare point of conscience on trying to reverse the corrupt cesspool of advocacy politics today in America.?

I disagree with him on how he wants to throw the Pentagon at so many of America's international problems today -- with little regard for the overall stock of American power and with out working harder to discern what are America's core strategic challenges that are generationally-defining and other conflicts that may draw a moral impulse from us but which may need different tools and approaches.

In this promo video clip, it is interesting to note the decent amount of coverage given to Cindy McCain's work in Africa.? In one of the photo clips, she is shown with Ben Affleck. I'm glad to see Cindy McCain's efforts as part of the Institute's first self-narrative.

There are more than 1,500 think tanks in Washington -- most of them small one-person boutiques but many that are either homes for governments in exile or others that engage in serious policy work but are well-taught to pull their punches and avoid risk.

I'm glad the McCain Institute will be based outside of Washington -- and will also be run by Kurt Volker, a brilliant and steady national security hand who is well-liked and well-respected not just by Republicans, Dems, and Independents -- but by a range of foreign policy types from neocons to liberal internationalists to realists.? Kurt Volker is absolutely the right person to give the McCain Institute instant credibility and gravitas.

We look forward to seeing what the Institute's first contributions will be.
