Global Strategies: Western Governors University student mentor ...

On Tuesday, 2/7/12, the Oregon House Higher Education Committee held a hearing on HB 4059, which would, among other things, direct the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission ?to report to Legislative Assembly on proposed partnership with Western Governors University to provide online higher education degree programs and financial aid for Oregon students enrolled in university? (here).

I am a supporter of the Western Governors University and an advocate of extending financial aid to Oregon students enrolled in it.

I previously posted a video of Scott Jenkins, Director of External Relations for the Western Governors University, testifying before the Oregon House Higher Education Interim Committee in November, 2011 (here). Jenkins testified again on 2/7, but I chose to post a video of one of WGU?s student mentors testifying (above).

why I need to practice with my lathe - Family Woodworking

I think if I chuck up a hunk of wood I could turn a bowl or tray in an hour or two once I get the hang of it.
Im trying to make a serving tray using my router and template.
Uh vey, what a serious waste of time.
After gluing up alot of boards, and running them through the drum sander, I laminated 2 layers together, cherry and maple(thats what I have in shorts).
I was afraid the lamination might not be perfect, so I used 30 wood screws where I knew once the glue dried and remove them, Id be drilling out the holes anyway. It was a good idea.
so this is where Im at after almost 3 hours into this thing.
I figured I have another 2 hours before I can start sanding.
I have alot of lucite, so I made a 12inch x 12 inch plate for the router, to slide over the template.
Works well. better than buying it for 20 bucks.
Its a slow, tedious process.
I think Id enjoy the lathe work more, just have to eventually get a larger lathe.

After I hit the 2 hour time limit I set for myself, experimenting with making boxes for money, I put the 2 machine made dovetailed boxes aside, probably wont finish them, as it was an experiment in time vs production for profit, and its a complete failure profit wise. Im not unrealistic in believing what anyone can get for a simple box.
I might finish that serving tray, only because I used alot of wood, and Id hate to toss it into the fire pit at this point. I had cut out a circle pattern so I can cut a few at a time and try to see if it can be profitable. Just dont think a tray like that will fetch 200 dollars, so whats the point.
(I know my circle center is off, before I cut tray outside, I will measure again and get center.)

Car advertising. | YSSR HOME AND FAMILY

Whenever someone needs to sell a car, it can be a very stressful experience. It can be difficult to know how to go about trying to sell your car and the whole process can seem quite overwhelming. Advertising your car is the most crucial first step in selling any car. Without advertising, no one will even know that your car is even for sale. When advertising your car, two of the most common places to turn are the Autotrader magazine or by online car advertising.

By advertising your car in Autotrader, you will get an advertisement that will run for two weeks. This advertisement includes one small photo of the car as well as two hundred characters of text. There are many regional editions of the Autotrader and the owner of the car can choose which region they would like their advertisement to run in. Advertising in the Autotrader is fairly expensive though.

Although there are many advantages to advertising your car in the Autotrader, there are some disadvantages. The first being that you have limited circulation and a limited shelf life; you also only have two hundred characters to describe the car. This is not a lot and will cause you to have to cram as much information as you can into a very small space. Also, because you only get one picture, you need to make sure that you capture the total essence of your car in that one photo. This is most often impossible to do.

For these reasons, many people prefer to advertise their car online. There are many advantages to advertising your car this way. One of the biggest advantages in advertising your car online is that it?s significantly cheaper than advertising in print. This is because bandwidth and disk space are much cheaper than paper, ink, and magazine distribution. This makes for big savings that can be passed on to the seller.

The other advantage to advertising your car online is that there can be much more information included in the advertisement. Also when advertising your car online, you are usually allowed more than one picture in your advertisement. This can make a true portrayal of your car and can interest more buyers. Also, on many sites you can advertise your car until sold for far less than you can advertise it for two weeks in a car magazine.

Advertising your car online allows for many more potential buyers to look at your ad. Because it?s online, anybody with an Internet connection will have access to the advertisement. This will mean that not only are more people looking at the ad but there will be potential for many more bids among interested buyers. This could mean getting a much better price for your car.

Why Don't Property Management Companies Just Buy Property ...

Property ManagementProperty management can make your life as a landlord very easy, but at a cost. Are these property management companies worth the money you pay them and why don?t real estate property management companies just buy their own rentals? These are questions that scare me from being a landlord.

When considering owning rental properties I always come across the same problem, why wouldn?t property management companies simply buy the property I am considering? A while back I was looking at a $35,000 condo and the realtor showing it even offered to be my property manager. I though to myself, I am putting down $7,000 down plus closing if I buy this rental and this guy looks like he has $7,000, why wouldn?t he just buy it and manage it for himself?

The answer is kind of sad. Property management has less risk and more reliable profits by not actually investing in the properties. Don?t get me wrong, lots of property management companies do have real estate of their own, but some companies only manage other?s properties.

If I offered you three opportunities, which would you choose?

Option #1, You Buy and Manage ? You Pay $7,000 today and profit $300 a month and have a 10% a year chance of losing $2,000 (to a major repair or bad tenant).? Profit in one year: $3600 ? 200 (10% chance of ?2000) = $3,400 ? Hassle and Risk

Option #2, You Buy and Someone else Manages ? You pay $7,000 today and profit $200 a month and have a 10% a year chance of losing $2,000 (to a major repair or bad tenant), but have no phone calls or interaction with the actual tenant. Profit in one year: $2400 ? 200 (10% chance of ?2000) = $2,200 ? Risk but less hassle

Option #3?You Manage ? You pay $0 today and you profit $70 a month and possibly an additional $700 every time you sign a tenant and have no risk. Profit for one year: $1,540 ? 0% risk, some hassle.

The point of this article is to ask one question, why are their companies who only manage other people?s properties. If there is enough money for them to make their cut and also give you your cut ? why wouldn?t they simply buy these properties and cut out you out. They wouldn?t have to hassle with setting you up as a client or giving you a call when something goes wrong. Why would they not manage their own properties ? since there is so much money to be made.

You might say, maybe they don?t have the money to invest ? but if they were really this successful, they could find an investor. The fact of matter is there is no risk to the property management company. If the $1200 a month house doesn?t rent, they aren?t out $1200, they are out $120 of revenue. If the roof caves in or the a/c or furnace gives out, they aren?t footing the bill (if anything they are sending you a bill and possibly getting a kickback from the handyman performing the service). Make no mistake, these managers are making money when repairs are performed.

If you really think about what I am saying, I think you will see that the writing is kind of on the wall ? Rentals are far from risk free and the hassles can be worth paying someone to handle them. Is there money to be made? Yes, but just something to consider.

Study finds jolt to the brain boosts memory

In an experiment likely to raise new hopes for those with memory-robbing diseases such as Alzheimer's, researchers have found that sending an electrical jolt to a part of the brain that plays a key role in memory improved people's ability to learn ? and remember ? their way across an unfamiliar landscape.

The study, conducted at UCLA and published in Thursday's edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, was small and highly preliminary, involving just seven patients with epilepsy. But deep brain stimulation helped all seven subjects ? including some who suffered memory impairment? navigate faster and more accurately through a virtual town.

Since the treatment also gave a boost to subjects with no signs of dementia, the study is likely to reignite a simmering debate over the ethics of enhancing the mental capacities of people in perfect cognitive health, experts said.

The new results build on animal studies that found deep brain stimulation not only boosted activity in the brain's memory centers, but spurred the growth of new brain cells when those regions were damaged. The fact that the same technique improved memory performance in humans makes some researchers optimistic that it might be a way to block or reverse the destruction of brain cells in patients with Alzheimer's.

Though physicians are now able to diagnosis Alzheimer's disease earlier than ever ? sometimes years before memory lapses and other cognitive changes become evident ? they are still at a loss to alter the disease's progress.

Deep brain stimulation involves the insertion of guide wires through the skull and into the brain, where they deliver electrical current to clusters of neurons that no longer function properly. It is widely used in the treatment ofParkinson's disease, in which damage to regions of the brain's motor cortex cause tremors, rigidity and unsteady gait. About 90,000 Americans have had the battery-powered, stopwatch-sized devices implanted in their brains, and they often show marked improvement. But the neurostimulator has not been found to slow or block the progression of that disease.

The technique is also being used for patients with epilepsy, to disrupt the storm of electrical current in the brain that causes seizures. The patients who took part in the memory trial were candidates for this treatment, and in preparation for surgery they had electrical probes inserted in their brains ? giving researchers the opportunity to conduct their experiment.

The goal was to explore whether stimulation to two key memory regions of the brain would deliver improvement in cognition. With their heads immobilized, the patients had electrodes placed in their brains. Then they played a virtual game of taxi driver, learning their way through an imaginary town in order to reach six destinations.

While navigating the new landscape, the subjects sometimes got deep brain stimulation to one of two areas ? the hippocampus or an adjacent structure called the entorhinal cortex ? and other times got no neurostimulation at all.

The researchers found that when subjects' entorhinal region was stimulated while they navigated through the maze for the first time, they were speedier and more accurate in learning the way to certain destinations than when they explored a similar maze without stimulation.

For instance, subjects outlined routes to stores that were 64% shorter, on average, when the entorhinal cortex was stimulated compared with when it was not. When electrodes delivered stimulation directly to the hippocampus, some subjects improved their performance while others got worse.

Itzhak Fried, a UCLA neurosurgeon who worked on the study, called the hippocampus "the master organ of memory." But he said the greater improvements seen in the memories of patients who got stimulation to the adjacent entorhinal region suggested a new target for treating memory loss.

"The entorhinal cortex is a gateway into the hippocampus," Fried said. "If you are to consciously recollect incoming information, it needs to be processed here."

In an editorial accompanying the study, University of Toronto neurologist Sandra E. Black called the potential application of deep brain stimulation in the treatment of memory disorders "enticing."

And Dr. Maria Carrillo, scientific director of the Alzheimer's Assn., agreed that electrically stimulating the brain's memory centers may hold greater promise. But she cautioned that the complexity and breadth of destruction in Alzheimer's make it resistant to simple fixes.

"It's a little early to talk about deep brain stimulation as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease," she said. "But certainly it's tantalizing."

The study has many drawbacks beyond its small size, including the fact that participants did not have a uniform level of memory impairment and that the tests measured only spatial memory, not memory of faces, places and words, the researchers said.

Andres M. Lozano, a neurosurgeon at the University of Toronto who has conducted similar experiments in mice, said this line of research already had piqued the interest of people with normal memory function who seek a little intellectual edge.

"These are major ethical issues society will have to grapple with when the time comes," Lozano said.

"This opens up a Pandora's box."

Planned Parenthood, Komen, and Breast Cancer ? Coming Home

In the ongoing discussion about Komen funding for Planned Parenthood, it is essential that people understand the central issue, which is Komen funding an organization whose activities actually contribute to the incidence of breast cancer. One commenter on yesterday?s post, Dave Bunnell, left a very succinct statement with a perfect analogy to capture the essence of this debate. I thought it deserved its own post. Thanks, Dave. You?ve nailed it!

Reblogged this on The Bunnell Blog and commented:
Planned Parenthood?s activities increase breast cancer rate more than anything else Komen Foundation does decreases it. For Komen to give into PP?s campaign of lies and pressure to give them money would be like Mothers Against Drunk Driving letting Budweiser shake them down for funds.

Obama administration trashes religious liberty with contraception ...

Because of the volume?of email I have received on this Chicago Tribune column, I am posting some of the comments below. These comments--which came to me directly in email at dennis@dennisbyrne.net--are in addition to the many comments posted on the Tribune site under my column, at?http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/ct-oped-0207-byrne-20120207,0,3249104.column.

When James Madison, the "father of the Constitution" originally proposed that the Bill of Rights contain a clause to protect religious freedom, he saw it as more than simply a wall between church and state. His draft language included a strict ban on government infringement "in any manner, or on any pretence" on "the full and equal rights of conscience."

The final language of the First Amendment and many ensuing court cases have somewhat fogged that original meaning, focusing instead on preventing organized religion from imposing its views on the body politic. As it should.

But if you ask Americans if they have a free-conscience right to practice their religion in any way they please, most would say for sure, Constitution or no. Don't ask that in the?White House?though. The Obama administration has launched an unprecedented and stunning assault on freedom of conscience and religion.

Most spectacular is the Obama administration's view that religious organizations have no greater right to hire or fire their own ministers than secular organizations have over their leaders. The Supreme Court, usually closely divided, found the administration's argument so preposterous that it unanimously ruled it unconstitutional.

More recently, on Jan. 20, the Obama administration finalized regulations that force employers, including Catholic and other religious institutions, to provide insurance that covers?birth control, without deductibles or co-pays, to its employees in hospitals, charitable organizations, social-service agencies and universities. Because prescription contraceptives, sterilization and abortifacients (chemicals that effectively kill a fertilized egg) violate their teachings and consciences, Catholic and other churches have loudly objected. Some declared they wouldn't comply, setting up a major constitutional fight.

Read the rest of this column on the Chicago Tribune op-ed page.

The readers get their turn:

Dennis:?Let me preface this correspondence with the fact that I am a practicing?Roman Catholic?from a big Irish Catholic family.??However, I respectfully disagree with your assertion that the state has no role in asking, let alone demanding,?a for-profit wing of the Church to follow federal law.? The federal government is not asking/demanding that the Church and its'?followers bow to their laws.? The federal government is asking/demanding a?private, for-profit?wing of the non-profit, tax-free Church who receives payment in the form of federal tax dollars (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) not to prevent a free individual from having the option of contraception in their insurance coverage.?The issue is not?abortion?or contraception.? The issue is keeping the Church from trumping public policy and forcing their beliefs on Catholic and non-Catholic employees who freely choose to use contraception.? Abortion is a legal procedure, like it or not.? The separation of the Church and state is a sacred American treasure.??You don't have to have an abortion or use contraception, Dennis.? Nor does your wife.? But, as a person who lives in a very real world, I thank the same God we mutually worship in the same Church that abortion is safe, legal, and rare.?I only wish the journalistic acolytes of the Vatican would use one-tenth of their energy focusing on poverty and hunger - period.? It will do more to make abortion rare. ?Instead, we keep reading articles about a red herring in abortion which is legal and will never be illegal.? At least not over my dead body.??I don't believe in abortion, but I cannot take that choice of a medical procedure away from a woman in a free society.? Please, re-read the underlined, understand it, digest it, and appreciate that it is the essence of freedom (tolerance).?Your headline was crafty... I will give you that.? It drew me in.?May you and your family have a good rest of the winter and a pleasant St. Patrick's Day season! -T.M.

Dear Dennis,

I read your article, "State must remain out of matters of church", and as you know you claimed that offering?birth control?would conflict with church freedoms.? But as I'm sure others will point out is that this is only a choice.? Birth control isn't mandatory.? It should be the other way around; not offering birth control would allow the church and religion to dictate public policy.? I think you should stop relying on fuzzy math.? Thanks. -A.W.

Mr. Byrne:I feel you have mis-characterized and mis-applied Constitutional arguments in your zealotry to defend the indefensible:? that an employer has an inalienable right to enforce religious beliefs and practices upon their secular employees.Let me tell you of a real concern which may threaten my husband's life.? He has a condition called MGUS.? It entails an increased risk of developing cancer.? He is under care of an oncologist, who tests him regularly to check for the development of this cancer.? He has worked at the same privately-owned company for?over twenty years, and hisemployer-sponsored health?insurance is (thank heavens!) covering this very expensive testing, including the bone-marrow biopsies he has received.? (Three, so far, all clear).?Here lies the problem:? In the last couple of years, the company owner's wife has converted to the Jehovah's Witness religion, and I am told, has converted her husband as well.? This religion, among its many tenets,?absolutely forbids the use of blood transfusions, even to save life.? Should my husband develop cancer, his treatment would include the use of transfusion, specfically of bone marrow.? Does my husband's employer have the right to deny coverage for this lifesaving?transfusion, specifically prohibited by their religious beliefs??Of course, one could argue that my husband has a perfect right to pay for these transfusions out of his own pocket.? This would bankrupt us, as anyone who has faced catastrophic illness will tell you.I love my husband with all my heart, and hate that he is going through so much pain and uncertainty.? Why are you advocating a policy that could add to his pain and uncertainty, or take his life if we cannot raise the money to combat this disease on our own?"State must remain out of matters of the church"? Indeed, the churches must remain out of the affairs of state, or we will all suffer.Respectfully, -S.L.

GOP race turns to Colorado, Minnesota (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Now it's on to Colorado, Minnesota and Maine.

With back-to-back victories fueling him, Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney is looking toward the next states that hold GOP nominating contests as main rival Newt Gingrich brushes aside any talk of abandoning his White House bid __ all but ensuring the battle will stretch into the spring if not beyond.

Shortly after losing big to Romney here, the former House speaker emphatically renewed his vow to campaign into the party convention in Tampa this summer. His goal, he said, was to "find a series of victories which by the end of the Texas primary will leave us at parity" with Romney by early April.

Gingrich continued to shrug off Nevada's caucus results in an appearance on Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press."

"This is the state he won last time, and he won it this time," he said of Romney. "Our goal is to get to Super Tuesday where we're in much more favorable territory."

But first, Gingrich must make it through Colorado and Minnesota, which both hold caucuses Tuesday. Maine follows on Saturday during a month that promises to be as plodding as January was rapid-fire in the presidential race. Romney will look to maintain his position of strength, if not build upon it, as his rivals continue working to derail him even as their options for doing so narrow with each victory he notches.

The former Massachusetts governor held a double-digit lead Sunday morning over his nearest pursuer as the totals mounted in Nevada, where fellow Mormons accounted for roughly a quarter of all caucus-goers. Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul vied for a distant second. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum trailed the field.

Santorum won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa and has trailed in the contests since then. He nonetheless insisted on Sunday that "our numbers are moving up continually."

"I think we're going to show improvement. This race is a long long way from being over," Santorum said on Fox News Sunday.

And on ABC's "This Week," Paul maintained the results show voters are still up for grabs.

"I get energized because I know there's a large number of people who are looking for another option," Paul said.

With votes from 71 percent of the precinct caucuses tallied, Romney had 48 percent, Gingrich 23 percent, Paul 19 percent and Santorum 11 percent. Turnout was down significantly from 2008, when Romney also won the state's GOP caucuses.

Romney's victory capped a week that began with his double-digit win in the Florida primary. That contest was as intense as Nevada's caucuses were sedate __ so quiet that they produced little television advertising, no candidate debates and only a modest investment of time by the contenders.

A total of 28 Republican National Convention delegates were at stake in caucuses held across the sprawling state. Romney won at least 10, Gingrich at least four, Paul at least three and Santorum at least two. Eight were still to be determined.

That gives Romney a total of 97, including endorsements from Republican National Committee members who will automatically attend the convention and can support any candidate they choose. Gingrich has 30, Santorum 16 and Paul seven. It will take 1,144 delegates to win the Republican nomination.

Preliminary results of a poll of Nevada Republicans entering their caucuses showed that nearly half said the most important consideration in their decision was a candidate's ability to defeat President Barack Obama this fall, a finding in line with other states.

About one-quarter of those surveyed said they were Mormon, roughly the same as in 2008, when Romney won with more than a majority of the vote in a multi-candidate field.

The entrance poll was conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press at 25 randomly selected caucus sites. It included 1,553 interviews and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

US closes embassy in Syria because of insecurity (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration closed the U.S. Embassy in Damascus on Monday and pulled all American diplomats out of violence-wracked Syria as the U.S. stepped up pressure on President Bashar Assad to leave power.

Robert Ford, the American ambassador, and 17 other U.S. officials left Syria and were expected to travel back to the United States. Ford informed Syrian authorities of the decision to leave earlier in the day, State Department officials said. Two diplomats left by air and the others went overland to Jordan.

Their departure comes two weeks after the State Department warned that it would close the embassy unless Assad's government better protected the mission, citing safety concerns about embassy personnel and a recent series of car bombs. And it coincides with a U.S. effort to build an international coalition in support of Syria's opposition.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement that Ford remains the U.S. ambassador "to Syria and its people," and said he would continue his work on Syria, maintaining contacts with the Syrian opposition and supporting "the peaceful political transition which the Syrian people have so bravely sought."

The State Department also warned Americans against any travel to Syria. It recommended all U.S. citizens remaining in the country to depart immediately. The Polish embassy will provide emergency consular services for Americans remaining in Syria, the State Department said.

The U.N. estimates that well over 5,400 people have been killed since March, when mostly peaceful protesters rose up to voice their anger toward four decades of dictatorship by the Assad family. A brutal crackdown ensued, prompting armed rebels to take the fight to regime troops and try to establish control in pro-opposition areas. The government has responded with even more violence, raising fears of an all-out civil war.

Despite the increased bloodshed, world powers are bitterly divided over how to deal with the situation. The U.S., its European partners and much of the Arab world want Assad to step down and transfer power to his vice president as part of a transition to democracy. But Russia and China, wary after watching the West help Libyan militia oust Moammar Gadhafi, reject any talk of military intervention or regime change. They vetoed a U.N. resolution over the weekend that would have endorsed an Arab League plan for Syria's post-Assad future.

President Barack Obama said the ongoing conflict in Syria should be resolved without outside military intervention, saying a negotiated solution in Syria is still possible. And he defended his administration's actions during the 11-month uprising against Assad's regime.

"We have been relentless in sending a message that it is time for Assad to go," Obama said during an interview with NBC. "This is not going to be a matter of if, it's going to be a matter of when."

Obama deflected questions about whether the U.S and its partners should intervene militarily in Syria as they did in Libya, saying those decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

"Not every situation is going to allow for the kind of military solution we saw with Libya," he said. "I think it is very possible for us to try to resolve this without recourse to outside military intervention."

With diplomacy at an impasse, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called Sunday for "friends of democratic Syria" to unite and rally against Assad's regime, previewing the possible formation of a group of like-minded nations to coordinate assistance to the Syrian opposition. Speaking in Bulgaria, she said the world had a duty to halt the violence and see Assad out of power. She called the U.N. setback a "travesty."

The contact group is likely to be similar, but not identical, to the one established last year for Libya, which oversaw the international help for Gadhafi's opponents. It also coordinated NATO military operations to protect Libyan civilians, something that is not envisioned in Syria.

The Syrian group is likely to concentrate on enhancing sanctions against the Assad regime and trying to bring disparate Syrian opposition groups inside and outside the country together so that they can form a more formidable opposition. It could also seek more humanitarian relief for embattled Syrian communities and greater monitoring arms sales to Assad's government.

Earlier Monday, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said China and Russia were running the risk of suffering the same sort of international isolation as Assad because of their decision to block a U.N. Security Council vote embracing an Arab League solution for the Syrian crisis.

Rice said she thinks both Moscow and Beijing "will come to regret" their votes Saturday against the Arab League-sponsored resolution aimed at moving Assad in the direction of a peaceful transition to democracy in his violence-wracked country.

The Obama administration has long called on Assad to leave power, and officials insist his regime's demise is inevitable.

But just over a year ago, the administration had sought to engage Damascus and sent Ford to the country in the hopes of prying away Iran's main ally in the Arab world and gaining a more willing partner in American efforts to forge stability in Lebanon and peace among Israel and its Arab neighbors. Syria had gone years without an American ambassador after the Bush administration broke ties over Syria's alleged role in the 2005 assassination of politician Rafik Hariri in neighboring Lebanon, and it remains on a U.S. "state sponsor of terrorism" list.

Assad largely shrugged off U.S. attempts to pull his nation away from its alliances with Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. And as protests escalated in Syria, Ford took on an increasingly high-profile role defending the rights of Syrian protesters. Threats led the U.S. to pull him out of the country in October, but he returned in December to what officials described as an important job monitoring abuses and developments on the ground ? even if U.S. engagement efforts were dead.

To improve security, Washington wanted Assad's government to narrow a portion of the main Damascus thoroughfare that the embassy is located on so that its setback could be improved. The Syrians refused. The U.S. had sought to move the entire embassy elsewhere in Damascus for two decades, but has never received permission from authorities.

Shutting the embassy and recalling American personnel is short of a complete break of diplomatic relations. A year ago the U.S. similarly closed its mission in Libya's capital as violence escalated, yet maintained for some time communications with senior Libyan officials as it sought to convince Gadhafi loyalists to abandon the regime and others to advance possible surrender scenarios.

With Gadhafi's death last year, the revolutions that toppled decades-long leaders Hosni Mubarak in Egypt and Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia, and Yemen's long-time strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh receiving medical care in the United States, Assad is among the Arab Spring autocrats left standing. His forces remain formidable and he continues to receive political ? and possibly some military support ? from Russia and China, but he has been unable to snuff out Syria's opposition.

After the U.N. veto, the commander of the rebel Free Syrian Army, Col. Riad al-Asaad, said "there is no other road" except military action to topple Assad.

Blast hits Egypt's gas pipeline to Israel (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? An explosion hit a gas pipeline running from Egypt to Israel Sunday, witnesses and state television reported.

The pipeline, which also supplies gas to Jordan, has come under attack at least 12 times since Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was toppled in 2011.

The latest blast took place in the Massaeed area west of the Mediterranean coastal town of al-Arish. Gas pumping was stopped after the explosion.

Residents in al-Arish told Reuters they could see flames from their town. Security forces and fire trucks raced to the scene, witnesses said.

Security in Sinai loosened after Mubarak's fall as the police presence thinned out across Egypt.

Egypt's 20-year gas deal with Israel, signed in the Mubarak era, is unpopular with some Egyptians, with critics accusing Israel of not paying enough for the gas.

Previous explosions have sometimes led to weeks-long shutdowns along the pipeline, run by Egypt's gas transport company Gasco, a subsidiary of the national gas company EGAS.

Egypt said in November it would tighten security measures along the pipeline by installing alarm devices and recruiting security patrols from Bedouin tribesmen in the area.

Sinai has long been a restive area, where Bedouins complain of government neglect. It hosts several Red Sea resorts with five-star hotels, but Bedouins say they do not see the benefits.

Egypt doubled the gas price for Jordan in October. Jordan said Monday it would raise electricity prices as of February to cover the rising burden of imported fuel costs after loss of regular Egyptian gas supplies.

Hey, Neelie Kroes, Maybe You Could Return Our Calls About This EU Cookie Law?

Screen-Shot-2012-02-06-at-09.29.06Early last year we pointed out that implementing the proposed EU cookie law would profoundly affect European technology companies and anyone running a business online out of Europe. Let's review why. First of all, it could mean that a staggering 90% of a site's visitors would run a mile rather than saying yes to accepting a simple Google Analytics cookie. This is what happened when the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) implemented the EU advise on their own web site.

Israeli prospector says natural gas found offshore (AP)

JERUSALEM ? American and Israeli gas prospectors say they have discovered a large amount of offshore natural gas in Israeli waters near the Lebanese border.

Delek Group Ltd. announced the discovery to Israel's stock exchange Sunday. U.S.-based Noble Energy Inc. is partnering with Delek on the offshore drilling.

The prospectors say based on initial drilling results, they estimate the Tanin 1 well contains close to 1.3 trillion cubic feet.

The announcement comes as Israel's only existing production field, Yam Thetis, becomes close to depletion.

Israel discovered two much larger gas fields in 2009 and 2010, with estimated reserves of 25 trillion cubic meters of gas. Production is to begin in about a year.

At midday, Delek shares were up by 1.9 percent on the Tel Aviv exchange.

Eight Good reasons to purchase lingerie online ? ArticlePlusX ...

1. Variety
Just one benefit of purchasing lingerie online is wide variety. A lot of retail shops and department stores offer only limited selection of underwear preferred among public. These are generally the cheap products affordable to everyone. If you?re looking for something special and unique, you should research on the web. That is especially true with sexy and exotic lingerie. You?ll definitely not find this type of apparel in the shopping center ? it can be too revealing to display in public places. Online shops provide extensive products selection, like fine lingerie, beautiful and practical everyday lingerie and boudoir lingerie. Some web shops offer range of sizes from petit to plus, while some cater for their own specialized niche.

2. Availability
Before the Internet, most women didn?t have choice but to buy lingerie supplied by their nearby shops. Only those living near to fashion capitals like Paris had access to high quality lingerie while the most of the population were forced to use unattractive cotton tails. Luckily, we are not living in dark ages anymore. Internet has blurred the borders between regions, countries and continents. You don?t have to live close to fashion hubs to buy nice lingerie. Even if you are in a remote area, you may have access to your favourite brands from around the world at your fingertips. Cyberspace is the best largest shopping mall!

3. Privateness
Not surprisingly, a lot of people don?t like buying lingerie in the existence of other people. Males purchasing underwear for their women usually feel not comfortable to talk about it with store personnel. Many women don?t feel comfortable to purchase this type of personal items in public. Buying lingerie online is going to save you from embarrassment and make your experience more pleasing. You don?t have to face store personnel attempting to show their skills at playing bra size guessing games, or even worse, feeling their eyes on your back when you are going through the stock. There won?t be any judgemental looks of fellow people not able to mind their own business. It?s totally discreet! You can make your purchases without anyone knowing. And you can browse for as long as you want.

4. Cost
Bricks and mortar shops have huge expenses, like rent, shop fit-out, security and inventory control. While online shops possess similar fees, they are much lower, and the savings are forwarded to clients. Tough competition also forces online shops to reduce their prices. Many lingerie shops offer discounts, promotions coupons and vouchers. Many provide additional benefits, such as free postage and gift wrapping. Even if shipping is not free, it is usually cheaper than fuel, parking and eating out in the shopping centre.

5. Comfort
You can?t underestimate the sheer comfort of buying lingerie online! You don?t have to spend time for your shopping trip, organise care for your kids or sneak out from your job. Unlike physical shops, whose operating hours are restricted and regulated, online shops are always available. You can make your purchases everywhere and have them delivered right to your door.

6. Possibility to compare
You may compare prices and policies on several websites to get the best package before purchasing your lingerie. Physical shops used to thrive on customers inability to gain access to information from competitors, often using geographically discriminative prices. In the internet environment this problem is absolutely eliminated.

7. Simple exploring
Online shops are more user-friendly in comparison with physical shops with all items classified into groups. You don?t have to browse through loads of mishmashed items to find something. You just need to choose the suitable classification. Some websites even have filters where you can refine your search according to brand, colour, size and style. No matter how many visitors in the online shop, products will remain neatly sorted.

8. Hygiene
Did you ever considered how many people tried on this pretty lingerie set at your local shop? The fact is many try stuff on just out of curiosity. Some others want to find the right size to buy the identical lingerie online. And let?s be realistic, all people are different. Not everybody has the highest standards of personal hygiene. This is actually the ugly side of shopping for gorgeous lingerie. Sometimes it is actually visible to the naked eye. After all, the biggest disadvantage of online shopping is inability to try before you purchase, has a positive side. You can feel confident that you will get fresh, newer lingerie. Of course, lots of online shops allow exchanges, but extra costs prevent people from buying items and returning them just for fun. Additionally, good online stores have limitation on types of items they accept for returns. It?s a generally acceptable practice to exchange bras and tops, but if the website is taking back sexy g-strings, think again!
