NEW DELHI: India today sought support from Japan for creating world-class infrastructure in the proposed national investment and manufacturing zones (NIMZs) to boost its manufacturing sector.

During the meeting of Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma and Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yukio Edano, issues related to Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor project were also discussed.

NIMZs will be mega industrial zones with world-class supporting infrastructure. The government is offering a host of incentives like exemption from capital gains tax and a liberalised labour and environment norms to promote these zones. The National Manufacturing Policy proposes to create 100 million jobs by 2020.

Both the ministers met on the sidelines of 44th ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) meeting and related meetings at Siem Reap, Cambodia.

"Sharma briefed his Japanese counterpart on the NIMZs and sought Japan's support for creating the infrastructure in the notified zones," a statement by commerce and industry ministry said.

The two sides have also discussed the modalities of release of $ 4.5 billion funds. Japan would invest this in the DMIC project.

"The Japanese concern on relaxation of capital regulations was also discussed and Sharma conveyed the significant progress made on the issue," it said.

India is considering to relax guidelines to encourage Japanese funds to invest in the ambitious $ 100-billion project.

The DMIC project is important as it would help in boosting investment in infrastructure sector and would also encourage overall economic growth of the country which has slipped to a nine-year low of 6.5 per cent in 2011-12.

The project, which was conceptualised in 2006, is being developed in collaboration with Japan as a manufacturing and trading hub.

Both the sides have targeted for $ 25 billion bilateral trade by 2015. The figure stood at $ 13.72 billion in 2010-11.

Where Was Obama? GOP Supporters Angry Over President's Travel Plans

SIOUX CITY, IA -

Some folks in Siouxland are calling out the Commander-in-Chief, the opposition is rallying just one day before the President of the United States visits Siouxland.

But their main concern isn't over something that's happening right now, it's over what didn't happen one year ago.

"You could kind of describe Obama as a fair weather friend," said Sioux City Councilman Keith Radi.?"He's one that's only there when he needs something from you, but when we needed his leadership he was nowhere to be found."

Those harsh words were aimed at the President Friday, coming from a Republican Rally at Bev's On The River in Sioux City.

President Obama's making the rounds in Iowa, he spoke to a crowd of students in Ames Tuesday.

"Will we make sure that more good jobs and opportunity take root, not in China or India or Germany but right here in Iowa and all across America so you don't have to leave home to get those good paying jobs?" said President Obama.

He'll make stops in Des Moines and Sioux City Saturday, but those aren't the trips making some folks upset.

It's a lack of travel, actually. Specifically: during last year's flood.

"Businesses just shut down for about four months," said Dick Salem, VP of United Commercial Real Estate.?"At least in this community in Siouxland it was a very sobering situation, we could have used the President of the United States to help at that time."

Those folks are upset that?the President didn't assess the damage, or even stop in Siouxland.

They're also made he's visit now, during his campaign.

"Now that the flooding is over and Iowans are starting to get their life back in order, President Obama decides to come to Sioux City," said Jim Roscovius of Sioux City.?"Why now? Only because he needs our votes."

Fruit company recalls mangoes with salmonella risk

(AP) ? Fruit distributor Splendid Products is recalling several lots of Daniella brand mangoes, which may have triggered an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened more than 100 people in 16 states.

The company said the recalled mangoes come from Mexico and carry the Daniella brand sticker. The affected lot numbers are: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959.

The mangoes were sold at various U.S. retailers between July 12 and August 29.

Splendid said it voluntarily recalled the product "out of an abundance of caution," after consulting government authorities.

Federal health officials are still investigating what caused the outbreak of 103 cases of salmonella Braenderup infections. U.S. and Canadian authorities are trying to identify which mango brands or sources may have caused the illnesses. No deaths have been reported.

(AP) ? They're the political world's newest odd couple: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are bound by substance, but differ dramatically in style.

The running mates share a love of policy, and a fascination with the world's economy and America's place in it. But where Romney is buttoned-up and reserved on the campaign trail, Ryan is relaxed and exudes a natural enthusiasm.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who once supported abortion rights and more liberal gay policies, has struggled to convince some Republicans of his conservative credentials. Ryan, the architect of an austere congressional budget blueprint, is a hero of the right.

As Ryan prepared to address the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night, the looming question was whether he'd steal the spotlight from Romney, who speaks Thursday.

So far, Romney has tried to share in his running mate's appeal rather than seek to outshine him. His campaign pared back plans for them to campaign separately in the run-up to the Tampa convention and instead scheduled more joint events.

Appearing together, Romney and Ryan drew crowds of up to 7,000 people, dwarfing Romney's largest solo event last week ? a speech to 1,600 at a manufacturing facility in Bettendorf, Iowa. And Romney, who is often restrained and cautious in the public eye, is clearly more ebullient and relaxed alongside Ryan, who campaign aides have dubbed "the partner."

"I am so happy! I am so happy to have my teammate now," Romney told cheering supporters during one of their first rallies together in Mooresville, N.C.

Ryan, for his part, said he had expected the demands of the campaign to be draining but instead "it's more energizing."

The 42-year-old Ryan has an obvious comfort on the campaign trail that Romney does not. He wears cowboy boots, skips up stairs two at a time and makes frequent sports references, including shout-outs to his beloved Green Bay Packers.

He also likes to poke fun at himself.

"We do cow-milking contests in Wisconsin," he told supporters at the Iowa State Fair earlier this month. "I usually lose to a 17-year-old woman, who grew up on a dairy farm, who's wearing like a sash and tiara."

There also is evidence of Ryan's active lifestyle wherever he goes. A former personal trainer, he works out at his hotel gym almost every morning. And he sprinkles his campaign speeches with mentions of hunting, skiing and hiking.

Romney struggled to connect with gun rights' advocates, for example, at one point saying he hunts "small varmints." Ryan, on the other hand, did an interview for Deer and Deer Hunting's October issue, telling the magazine that one of his goals is to hunt sheep with a bow.

"I don't know if I'll ever be able to try, but one of my goals is to get a grand slam of sheep with a bow," Ryan told the magazine. "It would be very tough and very expensive. But I'd love to do some of those great western hunts for sheep and deer."

Romney shares few personal stories in his campaign speeches and his interactions with voters are more measured. His most animated moments in front of a crowd often involve little more than a wave and a smile.

Despite their different personalities, Romney and Ryan both are data-driven thinkers who see themselves as problem-solvers ? and good ones at that. They view Romney's work in the private sector and Ryan's congressional budget expertise as complementary experiences that would serve them well in the White House.

Romney aides say they always expected Ryan to be a popular choice. And they dismiss the notion that having an attention-grabbing running mate could be problematic for the campaign.

"When they're together, the energy they create with voters is very apparent," said Kevin Madden, a Romney adviser. "They have a great rapport together that really helps as we travel from one event to the next and from one state to another."

Still, the campaign is well aware of the problems that cropped up when past running mates garnered too much attention or were trusted prematurely to play a prominent role in the campaign. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin infused John McCain's campaign with energy in 2008, but proved to be more of a distraction than an asset.

Charlie Black, a senior adviser to McCain's campaign, said he doesn't expect Ryan's popularity to become a liability for the Republican ticket.

"It's not a problem if the person stays on message," said Black, now an informal Romney adviser. "And Paul Ryan is going to stay on message."

Even as Romney seeks to benefit from Ryan's spotlight, he is distancing himself from some of his running mate's most controversial policy proposals. Embracing those positions could boost Romney's standing with conservatives, but also turn off more moderate voters.

Romney has repeatedly said the ticket was running on his budget proposals, not the budget Ryan crafted that calls for slashing spending and overhauling Medicare, the popular federal program for seniors. On abortion, the campaign says a Romney administration would not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest, while Ryan opposes it in those situations.

Democrats, however, are doing their best to make Ryan ? and his controversial budget proposals ? the center of attention. President Barack Obama points to Ryan as the Republican party's "ideological leader." His campaign, in a play for seniors and middle-class voters, is running ads casting Ryan's proposals for overhauling Medicare and drastically cutting other social programs as outside the mainstream.

Democrats also have rebranded Ryan's budget the "Romney-Ryan" plan. They're also using Ryan's views on abortion to link the GOP ticket to Todd Akin, the Republican Senate candidate in Missouri who said women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape."

Driverless cars get a push from California legislators

5 hrs.

Legislators in California have begun the process of legalizing self-driving?vehicles on the state's roads with a bill requiring the DMV to set safety and performance guidelines for them. Nevada did it last year, but?California's larger market and influence could help set standards worldwide.

The bill, SB 1298, was passed unanimously by the state senate Wednesday and should be on the governor's desk soon. This short?bill only sets out some basic requirements for the California DMV and Highway Patrol to work with:

The State of California, which presently does not prohibit or specifically regulate the operation of autonomous vehicles, desires to encourage the current and future development, testing, and operation of autonomous vehicles on the public roads of the state. The state seeks to avoid interrupting these activities while at the same time creating appropriate rules intended to ensure that the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles in the state are conducted in a safe manner.

(d)?Toward that end, the Legislature finds it appropriate to authorize the establishment of specific safety requirements for the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles, and to require that future testing and operation of autonomous vehicles in the state comply with those requirements.

Any regulations and standards later developed for the DMV to enforce will likely be the subject of much scrutiny and debate, but SB 1298 should have no trouble being signed by the state's governor, Jerry Brown.

Autonomous vehicles are already rolling around the state, of course: Google, based in Mountain View, has been working on them for years, and has even tested them out on city streets in San Francisco. The new law won't change much for them; in fact, with Google's?experience designing self-driving cars, Google and other companies will likely be as integral to the discussion as the Highway Patrol.

There's no specific time?frame, and of course it will be quite a while before autonomous vehicles will be sharing the road in anything more than a tentative manner.?

Convention speech highlights Mia Love?s GOP rise

TAMPA, Fla. ? Mia Love gave a stemwinder of a speech to kick off the prime time hour on day one of the Republican National Convention, a speech that brought the audience to its feet in cheers.

Love, the congressional candidate for Utah?s 4th District, is seen as a potential rising star in the Republican Party. An articulate speaker, she is an effective mouthpiece for the party, but she is also a good face as the party seeks to expand its base: if elected, she would be the first black, Republican woman ever elected to congress.

The crowd was already roaring with applause when Love took the stage, the volume rivaling the strains of Queen?s ?We Will Rock You? that played in the background.

Many in the crowd were likely unfamiliar with Love just minutes earlier. Currently the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, this is Love?s first foray onto a national stage. Delegates and guests were introduced to her at the start of the program by a video that featured Love talking about campaigning.

?The first day of college my father came with me to orientation, and I remember he looked at me. He looked at me very seriously and he said, ?Mia, your mother and I have done everything to get you to where you are right now. We have never taken a hand out. We have worked hard for everything we have through personal responsibility. You will not be a burden to society. You will give back,?? Love says, at the start of the video.

It?s a story that has become her calling card, at once providing a testimony to her conservative values and proving a first hand understanding of and belief in the American Dream.

When Love began speaking, the crowd, which had heretofore been milling around and chatting, tuned in.

?Let me tell you about the America I know,? she began. ?My parents immigrated to the U.S. with ten dollars in their pocket, believing that the America they had heard about really did exist. When times got tough they didn?t look to Washington, they looked within,? she said.

?So the America I came to know was centered in personal responsibility and filled with the American dream,? she said.

As Love went on to attack President Barack Obama, the crowd continually interrupted her, cheering wildly.

?President Obama?s version of America is a divided one ? pitting us against each other based on our income level, gender, and social status,? she said. ?His policies have failed! We are not better off than we were 4 years ago, and no rhetoric, bumper sticker, or campaign ad can change that.?

?Mr. President I am here to tell you we are not buying what you are selling in 2012,? she said.

?This is our story,? she said later. ?This is the America we know because we built it.?

At that, Love was temporarily silenced by the crowd, which went wild, breaking out into a spontaneous cheer of ?we built it,? which competed with chants of ?U-S-A.?

Love left the stage to a standing ovation, applause that rivaled that of the later, better-known primetime speakers.

It?s not the first time Love has rallied a crowd. At a speech at the Utah Nominating Convention in April, Love ? who was in a three-way primary ? spoke before the vote. She won in the first round of balloting with 70 percent of the vote.

It?s a testimony to her charisma and prowess as a speaker that the largely unknown Utahn earned a spot at the podium. The situation is not unlike that of a largely unknown Illinois state senator back in 2004, who gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention where Sen. John Kerry was nominated. The speech was the start of the career of then state senator Barack Obama, who four years later was elected president of the United States.

Like Obama?s speech, Love?s contained ?no revolutionary ideas?; rather, concepts that ?could have been plucked from any standard stump speech,? as The Washington Post described it in a 2008 piece. But also like Obama, Love had a compelling personal story around which to frame it.

?That speech was his launch,? Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin told The Washington Post in 2008. ?It changed everything for him.?

Love?s speech was not Obama?s 2004 speech that left the audience ?transfixed,? as The Washington Post described it, with tears in their eyes.

But it was a strong speech, and it captivated the audience, who minutes before were milling the aisles, having conversations amongst themselves, as reporters threaded through the crowd with cameras, filming television spots. When Love spoke, they listened, and they cheered. Loudly.

As soon as Love left the stage, the spell broke. The next two speakers ? actress Janine Turner and businesswoman Sher Valenzuela, a candidate for Delaware lieutenant governor ? faced a restless crowd that was not yet ready to sit still and listen.

?I loved it,? said one delegate, who said she didn?t know who Love was when she took the stage.

Republicans aren?t the only ones who are paying attention to the Saratoga Springs mayor. Democratic Super PAC House Majority PAC preempted Love?s speech Tuesday with $200,000 ad buy for a spot attacking her record on taxes.

Yet it remains to be seen whether Love can capitalize on her newfound stardom. She is running against incumbent Rep. Jim Matheson, a blue-dog Democrat who has remained remarkably popular in the red state. No polls have been conducted since June, when she was running behind.

The Deseret Daily News reported last month that her campaign was ?all in tangles,? and that national Republicans had stepped in to help guide the campaign, and protect the asset that her candidacy could be, helping to oust Matheson and give a fresh face for the party.

A person familiar with the campaign said she had a reputation for being ?flakey,? and noted that she had missed several appointments, including one with Orrin Hatch.

But with the attention and fundraising bump that will come from the convention, Love is likely to move full steam ahead toward the election.

Scott Thomson, your personal trainer | Yellowknife Online

My name is Scott Thomson and I?m a personal trainer and health and fitness blogger. ?I train at Just Fitness in Yellowknife, NT and I write at YourInnerSkinny.ca and I?m going to be writing for YkOnline.ca about being healthy and active in the North. ?Impossible, some may say, but I?m here to show you otherwise.

But let?s start at the beginning, my own personal journey with weight gain and then weight loss.

I was never a gym guy. I was a small, lean 155 lbs athletic kid when I was 18 and even though I was never a fat kid, I was what I call a ?fluffy kid? who played a lot of sports and ate a lot. ?During the summer before the 12th grade (Not the summer of ?69) I actually leaned out l when I grew 7?.

I grew up in a very small community in Prince Edward Island, surrounded by my family. ?I played hockey, softball, golf, and rugby all at the competitive level and then pretty much any other sport recreationally. ?I also come from a very athletic family with my father being a great hockey player, softball player and golfer and my mom being a superstar hockey goalie and softball player as well. ?My brother played soccer and was the captain of his University soccer team and also played hockey and softball when he was younger.

When I went to college I stopped playing sports and started drinking a lot of beer, almost at a competitive level. ?I started smoking a pack of cigarettes a day and I was doing nothing to be active which set me up for a lifestyle that I would come to regret.

With my first desk job and my new terrible lifestyle, there was a point in my life when I weighed somewhere between 265 and 275 lbs. I was inactive, I smoked, I drank 8-12 beer every night, I didn?t cook and I ate nothing but the worst kind of take-out food in mass quantities. ?I was the epitome of someone who was on the fast track to a short life.

After being about 100 pounds overweight for six or seven years, I had finally had enough of the ridicule I had been getting from my family and friends and decided I needed to lose the weight.

When I first started my journey there were a lot of ups and downs. ?I yo-yoed with my weight and I failed more times than I can count before finally figuring out what was right for me. ?It?s been 6 years since I finally reached my goal weight and fitness level. ?I now have 3 personal training certifications and I?m constantly reading and trying to improve myself and learning how to help others. ?I?ve had LOTS of ups and downs along the way and it?s still a daily struggle for me because I still love to polish off an entire large pizza and drink a dozen beer. But the biggest thing I?ve learned on my journey is to not punish yourself and to forgive yourself if you ?fall off the wagon?. ?Suck it up. Don?t feel sorry for yourself and move on.

Living in the North is tough. The cold. The darkness. The lack of fresh produce. ?The lack of healthy take-out food options. Even though this is all true, they?re also alll excuses.

With my bi-weekly posts on YKOnline I?m going to be talking about how to be healthy and active in the North, how to deal with the struggles that we face on a daily basis and how to claim victories. I?ll give you the information on how to eat well, how to be active, how to do exercise, and I?ll also share my stories, both of my successes and my struggles.

So, please, check back here for more from me and if you want to reach me at any time you can follow me on Twitter, Facebook or email me scott@yourinnerskinny.ca and of course you can follow my rantings and ravings at www.yourinnerskinny.ca.

Will Starving Yourself Help You Live Longer?

Rhesus monkeys, left to right, Canto, 27, and on a restricted diet, and Owen, 29, and a control subject on an unrestricted diet, at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on May 28, 2009 Rhesus monkeys, left to right, Canto, 27, and on a restricted diet, and Owen, 29, and a control subject on an unrestricted diet, at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on May 28, 2009

Photograph by Jeff Miller/UW-Madison, University Communications.

Rhesus monkeys do not often appear on the front page of the New York Times, but on July 10, 2009, there were two, pictured side by side: Canto, age 27, and Owen, age 29. In monkey terms, this made them the equivalent of senior citizens, but the striking thing was that Owen looked like he could have been Canto?s beer-drinking, dissipated dad. His hair was patchy, his face sagged, and his body was draped in rolls of fat. Canto, on the other hand, sported a thick (if graying) mane, a slender frame, and an alert, lively mien.

What made the difference? Diet. Since early adulthood, Canto had been fed 30 percent less food than Owen. The two monkeys were part of a long-running study of dietary restriction and aging, conducted at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center in Madison. Beginning in the late 1980s, the researchers had been deliberately underfeeding Canto and some of his unfortunate colleagues. By late 2008, enough animals had died that the scientists could report meaningful results in Science.

The differences were as striking as the side-by-side photos: The calorie-restricted monkeys were far healthier, in terms of basic measures such as blood pressure, and had far less incidence of age-related disease, such as diabetes and cancer. And they seemed to be living longer: While 37 percent of the control monkeys had died of age-related causes at the time of the report, only 13 percent of the restricted monkeys had done so.

The results seemed to confirm one of the longest-held beliefs about aging: That eating less?a lot less?will help you live longer. Since the 1930s, scientists have learned that restricting diet in many animals, from fruit flies to trout to mice, will extend lifespan, both the average and the maximum. The phenomenon has been known for so long, and observed so often, that it?s been accorded the status of near-dogma in some circles. A devoted group of believers who think the principle should extend to humans has practiced caloric restriction, sometimes eating as little as 1,200 calories per day.

Now a new paper has come out in Nature, reporting a parallel monkey study conducted by the National Institute of Aging. The NIA study began around the same time as the Wisconsin study, with similar experimental conditions. But the Nature authors found no increase in lifespan; the calorically restricted animals lived no longer, statistically, than their well-fed cousins. Even stranger, the NIA control monkeys, the ones who ate a lot, actually lived just as long as the calorie-restricted Wisconsin primates. What gives?

Many of us simply roll our eyes and click away when yet another medical study contradicts the last study?so what else is new? Coffee?s bad for you, until it?s good for you?and so is red wine. Antioxidants are essential, or they?re useless. And so on. Contradictory studies are an essential part of the science-news stream?and, in fact, an important part of science itself. But that doesn?t make it any less frustrating.

The parallel monkey studies are some of the most important and closely watched experiments on aging to be conducted in our lifetimes. It was expected, even assumed, that the NIA results would show that caloric restriction extended longevity?the holy grail of aging research.

The fact that it didn?t, and that the two studies conflict, has unintentionally revealed a different truth about diet and aging. In both studies, the monkeys that ate less were healthier by a number of measures?and suffered far less from age-related disease. Even better, when taken together, both studies reveal a different path toward living a healthier life?one that doesn?t require self-starvation. To understand the new findings, let?s begin with a taster?s tour of the strange, fascinating world of caloric restriction.

The concept goes back to the 1930s, when a young professor of nutrition named Clive McCay noticed that hatchery trout seemed to live longer when they were fed less. At the time, he was looking for more economical ways to raise the fish (it was the Great Depression, after all), and the long-lived, underfed fish were too small to interest anyone. But the phenomenon puzzled him enough that he set up an experiment in his Cornell lab, in which he fed one group of rats about one-third less than another group of rats. In his much-cited 1935 paper, he showed that the restricted rats lived more than 60 percent longer than the normally fed animals?more than 800 days, versus an average of 500 days.

This astonishing result was the equivalent of humans living to age 125 or beyond. Even more amazing was that the experiment was repeatable, not just in rats and mice. Over the years, various researchers have shown that caloric restriction can extend life in bats, dogs, and even spiders, and on down to nematode worms and single-celled organisms like yeast. After decades of work, it remains the only way known to increase maximum lifespan. So a lot is riding on the concept, scientifically speaking.

The idea made its way into pop culture, too. In On the Road, Jack Kerouac writes:

I stumbled out of Harrisburg?cursed city! The ride I proceeded to get was with a skinny haggard man who believed in controlled starvation for the sake of health. When I told him I was starving to death as we rolled East, he said, ?Fine, fine. There?s nothing better for you. I myself haven?t eaten for three days. I?m going to live to be 150 years old.?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

In the 1990s, Leonard Guarente of MIT discovered a class of longevity genes in yeast called sirtuins that appear to be activated by a lack of food. Sirtuins appeared to be ?conserved? in evolution, meaning that they appear in nearly all species, on up to humans. Sirtuins are thought to have evolved as a way to enable animals to survive periods of famine. They seem to work by regulating certain metabolic pathways and reduce the amount of damage cells endure.

Former Israeli commandos dominate politics

JERUSALEM (AP) ? When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had to fill a sensitive Cabinet post recently, he turned to an old army buddy from his days in an elite commando unit.

His choice for minister of civil defense, Avi Dichter, replaced another graduate of the legendary Sayeret Matkal unit. Netanyahu's defense minister and vice premier, as well as Israel's opposition leader, also served there.

It's Israel's most famous and secretive military unit. Among its known exploits are the 1976 rescue of hostages from an Air France plane in Uganda, a mission commanded by Netanyahu's brother, Yonatan, who was killed there.

In building his team at a time of tensions over Iran's nuclear program, Netanyahu appears to be relying heavily ? too heavily, some say ? on veterans of Sayeret Matkal. Supporters say the unit's prominent role reflects the intelligence, boldness and creativity of its soldiers.

Critics counter that skills honed in the military do not necessarily translate to the civilian arena and that key voices, particularly those of women, are being left out of critical decisions.

"It's a certain fraternity that for many years has managed to place security as the central issue in the country," said Yael Dayan, a former lawmaker and daughter of the late Moshe Dayan, the famous Israeli general and statesman. "They need a war to justify their own existence."

In a country that worships its war heroes, the military has long been a breeding ground for Israeli leaders. The exclusive, tight-knit Sayeret Matkal unit stands out.

Lawmaker Yohanan Plesner, a graduate of the unit who still does reserve duty, said the transition was seamless.

"When you are given an enormous amount of responsibility at a very young age, it gives you the confidence to take on that responsibility at the national level," said Plesner, 40, a rising star in the opposition Kadima Party. "There is no doubt that Israeli society appreciates those people who have risked their lives for the state."

On Tuesday, Netanyahu attended a gathering of his former army mates in memory of a late Druse Arab commander of the unit who oversaw Netanyahu during a secret mission. "You are my brother," Netanyahu said of the late commander, in a statement released by his office.

Israel's daily Yediot Ahronot said the commander saved Netanyahu's life during a clandestine operation in Syria at the end of the 1960s. A spokesman for Netanyahu did not immediately comment on the claim.

Netanyahu's office has declined to comment about the unit.

The military's website identifies Sayeret Matkal unit "the best combat unit" in the Israeli military and "one of the best special forces units in the world."

"It performs a variety of reconnaissance and commando missions, relying on extensive training as well as the most technologically advanced equipment available," said Capt. Eytan Buchman, a military spokesman. He refused to elaborate.

Sayeret Matkal is primarily responsible for intelligence-gathering missions behind enemy lines, so most of its operations are classified. But the unit has also been tasked with counterterrorism and hostage rescue operations, earning it a mythical status with the public.

The 1976 operation in Uganda is among few that have been made public.

In 1972, the commandos, disguised as airline technicians, raided a hijacked Sabena airliner on the ground in Israel. Netanyahu took part in the operation. A photograph of Ehud Barak, now Israel's defense minister, standing on the wing in white overalls as the hostages were disembarking has become part of Israeli lore.

The following year, commandos rowed boats to the Beirut beach and proceeded to kill top leaders of Black September, the Palestinian group that carried out the massacre of 11 members of the Israeli delegation to the 1972 Munich Olympics. The soldiers were dressed as civilians. Shorter soldiers, like Barak, were disguised as women.

The unit is believed to have later carried out similar assassinations and kidnappings of other wanted men, including the 1988 killing of Abu Jihad, a senior figure in the Palestine Liberation Organization, in a naval commando operation on the shores of Tunisia.

Sayeret Matkal has also had its fiascos, notably a 1992 training accident in which five soldiers were killed during a drill reportedly preparing for a possible assassination attempt on Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Candidates go through a rigorous selection process that includes psychological profiling and intense physical challenges. Only a few dozen are chosen each year and their basic training lasts 20 months. They earn their red beret after a grueling 120-kilometer (75-mile) march and then embark on specialized training that includes advanced navigation, weapons training, a sniper's course and camouflage, according to the army website.

Known in Israel simply as "the unit," only a few hundred serve in it at any given time. The prime minister sometimes stops by headquarters for a visit to hear about their exploits.

"A huge part of the brand is its secrecy. No one really knows exactly what they do there," said Ofer Shelah, a military analyst.

Being a member of this prestigious club grants access to high society and an old-boys club that can open doors in the military, the business world and politics. "Israeli politics is based on loyalties, friends promoting friends," Shelah said.

Unit fighters have gone on to become prime ministers, security service bosses, military chiefs, generals, lawmakers and wealthy businessmen.

At a ceremony last week marking Dichter's appointment the minister who would oversee civil defense if there is war with Iran, Barak spoke about their 40-year history together and how they've crossed paths in secret missions.

"I'm convinced you will bring to the job all the experience you have amassed over the years," Barak said.

Shelah countered that career soldiers were often "the least qualified to lead political systems."

"Their military jobs are not built on agreements, on open dialogue, on accepting the opinions of others or considering public opinion. Politics is all about that," he said.

Social psychologist Eyal Efrati, a retired colonel who once headed the military's behavioral science department, said the unit's prominence has more to do with Israeli society than the characteristics of the soldiers.

"We have this yearning for these people to lead us like they lead us in the army," he said. "It is important for us to hold on to this so that we can feel that no matter what happens, there will be someone to protect us."

Firefox 15 to arrive in finished form on August 29th, promises truly stealthy updates for all

Firefox 15 to arrive in complete form on August 29th, promises truly stealthy updates for all Mozilla has been keeping to a tight schedule of having a completed Firefox release every five to six weeks, and it's very much on track. The browser team's Ehsan Akhgari has confirmed that a properly polished version of Firefox 15 should reach the download servers on August 29th. When it does arrive, the new release will primarily expand the silent updates that Windows users first saw in Firefox 12: future iterations on all platforms will install themselves in the background and should be truly ready to go the next time the browser starts. Beyond this deliberately subtle change, the finished version 15 upgrade should still support Opus audio as well as clamp down on out-of-control memory use from add-ons. We're looking forward to not noticing the differences very shortly.

Myanmar takes 2,000 exiles off blacklist

Myanmar has removed about 2,000 exiles from an immigration blacklist drawn up by the former junta to allow them to return home as part of political reforms, the authorities said Tuesday.

"The people taken off the blacklist are civil servants who fled Myanmar a long time ago," an information ministry official told AFP.

"More than 6,000 former civil servants from government ministries were blacklisted. Some 2,000 were taken off today," he said. "They can come back to the country freely. The authorities will decide later whether to remove the others."

Several million people fled the country to escape the corrupted economy and political repression under army rule which ended last year, leaving a shortage of professionals to help manage economic and political change.

Many government workers and intellectuals left after a student-led uprising in 1988 that was brutally crushed by the military. Journalists who fled to work overseas were also blacklisted.

Since taking office last year, President Thein Sein has overseen a number of dramatic changes such as the release of hundreds of political prisoners and the election of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to parliament.

The former general -- who came to power following an election marred by widespread complaints of cheating and intimidation -- in May urged the millions who had fled the nation to return.

230-million-year-old mite found in amber

A long, wormlike, sap-sucking mite is now one of the oldest creepy-crawlies found preserved in amber yet, researchers say.

Insects, spiders and other buglike creatures make up a joint-legged group known as the arthropods. The earliest members of the ancestors of flies and wasps originated near the start of the Triassic period about 250 million years ago, but much remains unknown about the evolution of these and many other groups of insects during this distant era.

"There was a huge change in the flora and fauna in the Triassic because it was right after one of the most profound mass extinctions in history, at the end of the Permian," said researcher David Grimaldi, a curator of invertebrate zoology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. "It's an important time to study if you want to know how life evolved."

One way to learn more about prehistoric life is amber ? fossilized tree resin. Before it hardened, this ooze often dripped over bugs and other wildlife perched on its tree's bark, entombing them for millions of years.

"Amber is an extremely valuable tool for paleontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years," Grimaldi said.

Trapped in resin
Scientists have now revealed arthropods trapped in 230-million-year-old amber from northeastern Italy, which appears to hold the most abundant outcrops of Triassic amber in the world. These are the oldest amber-trapped arthropods by about 100 million years, and are the first arthropods to be found in amber from the Triassic, they say. [ See Photos of Amber-Trapped Bugs ]

"Without question, the most exciting thing is simply that we have established that arthropods can be found in Triassic-aged amber," Grimaldi told LiveScience. Many arthropods are tiny, and all have intricate anatomy, so to have them preserved with lifelike, microscopic fidelity in amber of this age provides a completely new window into the ancient past of arthropods. It's Triassic Park for us paleoentomologists."

The researchers analyzed about 70,000 droplets of amber, each 2 to 6 millimeters long.

"Gathering the amber is simple and fun, though not without its dangers ? it's in an absolutely gorgeous section of the Italian Alps, though the outcrops are on steep slopes," Grimaldi said. "Screening the amber required about two years, done by several assistants and students in the lab of my colleague, Alexander Schmidt, in Berlin. That is the constraining factor in this work, and I am thinking up a way to use high-resolution lasers to automate the screening, or of engaging the assistance of a group of bright high-school kids to help."

"Before preparation, one of the tiny flecks of amber, about 1 millimeter in diameter, wafted onto the floor of my lab," Grimaldi recalled. "Alex Schmidt and my assistant who did the prep, Paul Nascimbene, spent about three hours on their hands and knees with flashlights. I don't know how, but they found the speck on the floor hidden in the corner between two lab benches. It was a nerve-wracking time."

Tiny arthropods
Despite these challenges, the scientists discovered three arthropods. One was an insect, a midge fly, whose head, antenna, pieces of body and at least four legs suggest it was altogether just 0.06-0.08 inches (1.5 to 2 millimeters) large, or about the size of a pinhead.

The other two arthropods in the amber represent two new species of mites. These are miniature relatives of spiders, although these specimens both evolved to lose two pairs of legs.

One of the mites, Triasacarus fedelei, is just 210 microns long, or about twice the diameter of a human hair. Its distinctly wormlike shape suggests it may have lived in a tiny space that protected it from drying out. Its mouthparts are less fused together than the hypodermic-needlelike feeding structures of its modern counterparts ? "these are probably an early progenitor of modern-day gall mites, a primitive form," Grimaldi said.

The other, the 124-micron-long Ampezzoa triassica, had a more compact, spindle shape typical of mites with a vagrant lifestyle on exposed surfaces of plants. It apparently possessed waxy filaments on its surface, which may have protected it against predators and parasites, as well as from rain and drying out. [ Gross! 10 Bizarre Parasites ]

These mites are unexpectedly similar to their closest relatives, modern gall mites, creatures that feed on plants and cause abnormal growths known as galls to form around them.

"You would think that by going back to the Triassic you'd find a transitional form of gall mite, but no," Grimaldi said. "Even 230 million years ago, all of the distinguishing features of this family were there ? a long, segmented body; only two pairs of legs instead of the usual four found in mites; unique feather claws."

How mites evolved
The ancient mites probably fed on the leaves of the extinct species of conifer tree whose resin ultimately preserved them. These fossil mites lived before the appearance of flowering plants, which about 97 percent of today's gall mites now feed on.?

"We now know that gall mites are very adaptable," Grimaldi said. "When flowering plants entered the scene, these mites shifted their feeding habits, and today, only 3 percent of the species live on conifers. This shows how gall mites tracked plants in time and evolved with their hosts."

In the future, the researchers hope to find more rich Triassic amber deposits, "not just in Europe, but in North America too ? Triassic amber occurs, for example, in the Petrified Forest National Monument in Arizona," Grimaldi said. "The challenge for us, personally, is the tedious work required to screen through so many tiny droplets of amber ? 70,000 droplets for three specimens, in this case!"

The scientists detailed their findings online Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

VMware Kills Off A Pricing Scheme Customers Hated - Business ...

Customers should love new VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger's first big move.

He's killing off an unpopular pricing scheme that had really ticked off customers.

Called "vRAM," it was a complex way of figuring out how much VMware would charge for its software licenses. It was introduced a year ago, when VMware launched the latest version of its flagship product, vSphere 5. The company started? calculating pricing based on how much memory each server used with VMware software instead of more conventional pricing measures, like counting the number of server CPUs.

Suddenly customers were being charged a lot more money for VMware software running on the same machines.

The company surveyed 13,000 customers, Gelsinger said during his keynote speech today at the company's VMworld customer conference in San Francisco.

The top feedback they gave?"very loudly"?was "change your pricing," he said.

"'vRAM' is a four-letter dirty word. We are striking this word [out]," he said to loud cheers from attendees.

VMware is the market leader in what it does, a technology called "server virtualization." It's not the only game in town, though. Customers can use low-cost technology available from Microsoft, Red Hat, Citrix, and others. Microsoft specifically called vRAM a "vTax."

So VMware will go back to its original pricing schemes and try to increase per-customer revenue by selling them bundles of software for doing cloud computing.

This was a smart move. Customers are already interested in VMware's cloud products, which allows them to get more use out of their servers and data centers. If they opt for other server-virtualization products, VMware loses a shot at selling them additional software.

GOP may embrace Ron Paul and the gold standard

The GOP could incorporate some of Ron Paul's fiscal ideas, including the gold standard, into their platform, putting ecnonomists into attack mode.

But I expect we'll hear a bit about the Fed and the gold standard this week from the convention regardless.? Here's Paul Krugman's standard issue anti-gold primer to start you off:

Say this for the GOP: by resurrecting the very bad, no good, truly awful idea of a gold standard, they?ve given us something to talk about.

Matthew O?Brien makes one obvious point: anyone who believes that the gold standard era was marked by price stability, or for that matter any kind of stability, just hasn?t looked at the evidence. The fact is that prices have been far more stable under that dangerous inflationist Ben Bernanke than they ever were when gold ruled.

I?d like to offer a different take. There is a remarkably widespread view that at least gold has had stable purchasing power. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Rover's first find in Sharp focus

The Mars rover Curiosity is indulging in a flurry of multimedia activity ahead of its science mission proper.

It sent the first image from its 100mm telephoto lens, already spotting an intriguing geological "unconformity".

Nasa also released a colour panorama of Mount Sharp, the rover's ultimate goal.

On Monday, the rover relayed "the first voice recording to be sent from another planet", and on Tuesday it will broadcast a song from artist will.i.am as part of an educational event.

But alongside these show pieces, Curiosity - also known as the Mars Science Laboratory - is already warming up its instruments for a science mission of unprecedented scope on the Red Planet.

Nasa said that the rover was already returning more data from Mars than all of the agency's earlier rovers combined.

It will eventually trundle to the base of Mount Sharp, the 5km-high peak at the centre of Gale Crater, in which the rover touched down just over three weeks ago.

For now it is examining the "scour marks" left by the rocket-powered crane that lowered the rover onto the planet's surface, giving some insight into what lies just below it.

The rover will now employ its Dan instrument, which fires the subatomic particles neutrons at the surface to examine levels of hydrogen- and hydroxyl-containing minerals that could hint at Mars' prior water-rich history.

Another tool in its arsenal, the ChemCam, which uses a laser to vapourise rock and then chemically examine the vapour, will also have a look at the scour marks.

And the Sample Analysis at Mars or Sam instrument, itself a package of three analysis tools, has now been switched on and is being run through its paces ahead of "sniffing" the Martian atmosphere; the tests include analysing a sample of Earth air that was left in it at launch.

But what has caught the interest of Nasa engineers already is what is called an "unconformity" spotted in the rover's first images of Mount Sharp.

The term refers to an evidently missing piece in the geological record, where one layer of sediment does not geologically neatly line up with that above it.

Images from orbit had indicated that the lower foothills of Mount Sharp consisted of flat-lying sediments rich in "hydrated" minerals, formed in the presence of water, but that layers above seemed to lack the minerals.

Now, the rover's Mastcam - which provided the new colour panorama image - has taken a picture of the divide, showing sediments apparently deposited at a markedly different angle than those below them. Similar deposits on Earth can arise due to tectonic or volcanic activity.

Further investigation will have to wait some time however, as Curiosity takes a bit of a side trip.

The rover's multimedia streak will continue as it takes a short 10m drive and works on Tuesday to capture stereo imagery - like our eyes, combining two images to gain information about depth and distance.

At 20:00 GMT (13:00 PDT, 21:00 BST), it will relay a new song from will.i.am, to be broadcast on Nasa TV, as part of a primary educational initiative that will make use of Nasa technology including the rover.

On Monday, the rover received and beamed back a message recorded by Nasa administrator Charles Bolden, which read: "The knowledge we hope to gain from our observation and analysis of Gale Crater will tell us much about the possibility of life on Mars as well as the past and future possibilities for our own planet."

Next stop for the rover will be Glenelg, 400m to the east, which appears to be the intersection of three distinct geological regions - potentially rich pickings for the rover's suite of tools.

It will then set off for the base of Mount Sharp in a journey that will take several months.

  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next
