The fallout from Apple?s shift away from Google Maps has been well publicized, but help may be at hand for disgruntled iOS 6 users after a hacker successfully ported the iOS 5.1 version of Google Maps to the latest iteration of Apple?s mobile platform.
The hacker, Ryan Petrich, made an announcement through his Twitter feed on Monday, claiming that he had successfully managed to run the iOS 5.1 version of Google Maps on his iPhone 3GS running iOS 6. Petrich even posted a YouTube video to confirm his achievement.
Petrich was quick to point out that the Jailbreak-only hack was unstable at this stage and also stressed that he had no plans to release a ?bootlegged? copy of the app even if/when it becomes stable, preferring instead to stay within the confines of the law (and out of the cold grasp of Apple?s vampiric legal team, one must assume). But the work he did, while of little practical use in its current state, might give Google the kick it needs to get to work on an official version.
Until then you?re stuck using the HTML 5 version of Google?s solution, or taking your chances with Apple?s Maps ? but we wouldn?t suggest the latter unless you?re brave and/or have a sense of humor.
